“She’s not doing anything,” the nice one says, taking hold of my arm.

I cringe as his fingers connect with my skin, and he smirks when nothing happens.

“What’s taking you so damn long?” a voice crackles through the radio, the nice one drops my arm and moves further down the corridor.

I can’t hear his words but I know he’s talking to whoever has just radioed through. The douche is still glaring at me and the other one takes a small step further away, his eyes narrowed on me.

“You’ll pay for that, girl,” the douche whisper-snarls.

“I didn’t do a damn thing to you and you know it,” I growl back.

I don’t know what the hell is happening here, but I never thought I would want to get into the council chambers and start my trial as much as I do now. Something about the one that got zapped sets me on edge and I really don’t like being here in this corridor with only the three of them.

“Yes you did, you little reject,” douche snarls, climbing to his feet.

The evil glint in his eyes has me taking a step back, my eyes firmly on him. He takes a step forward and I take another one back… I’m sure they can hear my hammering heart rate as fear pumps through my veins. The cuffs get more erratic as the weather builds even further, then he lunges for me.

“No!” I scream, throwing my hands out, my palms buzzing.

I watch in horror as he soars through the air and hits the ground with a thud. The limp body slides towards the big guy, who is now paying attention to me rather than whoever is on the radio.

“Rick, grab her!” the nice one bellows.

My head whips around just as he reaches out for me, and I throw my hands up again and the same thing happens. I spot the empty corridor to my left, and without another thought I take off down it, hearing the roar from the last guard as I make my escape. Unfortunately, the chains don’t have enough give in them to allow me to run at my full stride. I hear a thud and look over my shoulder to see the big one charging down the corridor after me like a raging bull.

“Stop right there, inmate!” he booms.

I don’t stop until I reach a T-junction at the end of the corridor. I don’t have time to think as I hear the thundering footsteps heading my way, and I take off sprinting down the one to my right. My senses are running rampant, and the sound of voices coming from the other end make me briefly pause.I should have picked the other one!

Too late to do anything about it now.

The door at the end of the corridor opens and I try to stop, but end up falling on my butt with a humph. I had too much momentum running and I’m sliding towards the door. I daren’t look up to see who’s blocking my path, all I can do is hope that it’s not another douche guard.

“Why’re you on the floor, Pop?” a burly voice says.

Relief floods me as I look up.

“Ajax?” I ask in surprise, scrambling to my feet. The chains clink together making a tinkling sound, and the noise catches his attention, his eyes narrowing on the cuffs.

“What the hell are they?” he demands.

A firm grip encompasses my shoulder, and I’m yanked backwards with a squeak. The nice one growls in my ear and then launches me back down the corridor. My arms and legs flay, and my stomach spins as I torpedo through the air. I hit the ground and scream as pain radiates through my back. The building vibrates in its foundations as my cry of pain echoes through the corridor. Everything starts to shake like there is an earthquake, and I manage to roll onto my side and cover my head as pictures fall from the walls.

“Who are you?!” a high-pitched voice wails.

I peak through my arms covering my head, gasping in horror as I see an enormous shadow stretching up the wall and Ajax’s form is quadruple the size he was. The guard in his hold stammers something as a demonic growl fills the corridor. Ajax throws the guard, his body crashing through the stone wall before disappearing out of sight. I never thought I would be terrified of the person who made an effort with me at the Academy, but the guy I can see now isn’t someone I know.

I cover my head again, the fear of what is going to happen next has me curling into a tighter ball, my body shaking. I hear his heavy footfalls and all I can think of is he going to hurt me too.

“Pop.” The deep baritone of his voice sets me nerves on fire.

I don’t say anything, just trying to make myself as small as possible. I hear his sharp intake of breath as his hand wraps around one of my wrists gently, and I bite into my lip in with fear. He gently tugs at my hand, making my body go limp, and he pulls my arm away from my face.

“Please don’t fear me,” he says sadly. “I wouldn’t ever hurt you.”

I can’t say anything, my teeth are chattering together from the fear as my entire body trembles. He mutters something under his breath, but I don’t catch it. When he lets go of my wrist, he drops to the floor on his arse. He crosses his legs and just sits there staring at me, a sadness on his face that pulls at my heart.

All I can do is stare at him as I try and wrangle the fear within. He hasn’t taken his eyes off me.
