“He’s my friend and guardian,” I say, my voice stronger than I thought it would be.

All but one of the council members seem shocked at this, but the ancient looking one just stares at Kevin, like he’s trying to read something from us. I avoid eye contact with him and keep my eyes on my aunt, who looks so stoic at the moment. You wouldn’t believe that a family member was on trial and her being the ruling body means she is the one to decide my fate.

“We will deal with the situation of your guardian after we hear your plea?” a woman says, I turn just slightly to see her and a shiver washes over me at the hollow black eyes staring at me. She has to be from one of the witch clans, because I know some of them have eyes like that when they deal in the darker arts.

“It was an accident,” I mutter, shame washing over me at the memories of that day playing like a freaking home movie at the forefront of my mind. I should be happy that I have some form of power but the humans I hurt by accident is too much to bear. “The hunters went after Kevin and I just reacted.”

“What do you mean by hunters?” she asks.

Kevin starts relaying his account of the events, much to the whole councils’ annoyance. But that doesn’t stop him, in fact, I think it spurs him on as he describes everything bow by blow. All the council members eyes are on me as he speaks, but I daren’t lift my head to look back at them. I know they’re staring at me in either fascination or anger because if I were them, I would be the same.

“Poison!” my aunt snaps.

My head whips up to look at her on instinct, and years of having to deal with everything she dished out to me. She looks me over, but I can see the hatred she has for me shining in the depths of her eyes, even from this distance.

“Do you know me?” she asks, leaning forward in her chair.

“It was an accident, Aunt, I didn’t mean to do it,” I say again, hoping she will feel something else for me than the usual.

“What is my name?” she demands. I stand up taller and look her in the eyes. Damnit, the cat’s out the bag so I can’t play dumb. I’m gonna have to fake it ‘til I make it and stand up to her for once.

“Belladonna Draken, leader of the Draken clan and leader of the supernatural council,” I reply.

I hear Kevin scoff under his breath next to me, and hearing the disgust he has for her, even with magic cuffs and a muzzle on, I have to fight back the smirk tipping the corner of my mouth.

“Child,” the croaky voice pulls my attention to the ancient council member, “Are you the one who has no abilities?”

I nod my head in answer, my throat closing instantly as I hear the sniggers from around the room. I look around and see the place is filled to the brim with eager eyes watching me. The whole of the building must be in this room at the moment.

I spot a friendly smile in the masses, my eyes zeroing in on Ajax as he mouths for me to just breathe. I nod to him and give a soft smile, yeah, he scared the crap out of me in the hallway but I am glad he is here along with Kevin.

“If she has no abilities, how was she the one to cause the tornado?” another asks.

The room erupts into chaos, everyone starts shouting. The words all mingle into one, I can’t make anything out. The sound of metal clinking to my right draws my attention, making me turn and see the muzzle drop to the ground from Kevin’s face. My eyes widen and he smirks at me, then the magic restricting cuffs drop to the floor with a clang. Kevin pulls himself up to his full height and encases the room in a shadow that has everyone falling silent.

Ajax steps from behind him, a huge grin splitting his face as he wiggles the keys dangling from his fingers at me. I try not to laugh seeing the mischievous look on his face.

“See, I told you Hotty McHot stuff would be useful,” Kevin laughs.

“Will you stop it with that?” I hiss at me him, much to his delight.

The council members stare at Kevin as he grows in size. I have to crane my neck to look up at him… as do they. I can tell it makes some of them uncomfortable by the way they shift in their chairs.

“Guards,” my aunt shouts. “Seize him,” she bellows, pointing to Ajax.

The guards rush forward and Kevin flicks his tail, blocking their path from my friend. They argue amongst themselves on who is going to try and pass the basilisk blocking their path.

“Who are you?” The ancient one says.

“What does it matter, Lightfoot,” my aunt snarls.

He ignores her and keeps his eyes on Ajax, I can see the brush off has really annoyed her now from the way she’s bristling.

“We all know the prophecy, do we not?” he asks as he pushes up on his cane and stands on shaky legs. “I think it is about to come to pass.”

“That’s just a load of twaddle,” Dane snarls at the old man.

“Don’t speak down to me,” he throws back, which makes me want to shout you tell him to the ancient and encourage him just to piss the douche off. I really don’t like Dane and the fact he’s always around my Aunt makes me think he’s up to something. “I may be older than you and look frail, but do not test my power.”
