"She's mine to share, dick. You don't get totakeher."

“Does she know that?”

No, she doesn’t.

Yet.

Rhys’s style is unfamiliar, closer to street fighting than the schooled technique Magnus and I prefer—but I have gotten into squabbles with my younger brother enough times to handle a dirty fight.

He goes for the balls, like a fucking pussy. I close my leg and grab his arm, then twist it until he's flying over my back and falling on the floor with a crack.

Though he must have felt that, he laughs harder. “I must have hit a nerve,” Rhys breathes roughly, folding over his midriff.

I roll my eyes, spotting a feint a mile away. I anchor myself, steady heavy on the ground. When he sweeps to take me down a moment later, I shove my boot to his neck. “Oh, look. We have ourselves a fox in a trap.”

His bright blue eyes flash. “Do your worst, Goltz. I can die happy after fucking your woman’s cunt.Twice.”

I wasn’t going to kick his face. He’s right: his brother is almost as crazy as mine. There’s no telling what he might do in retaliation.

But then again, he could have, like, not fucked Sarah.

“Hope you have a surgeon on speed dial, pretty boy.”

And I bring my foot down to his face.

One fight over.

Another one scheduled for today.

SARAH

After I’m done packing my case, Rom helps me move to his floor; it’s laid out exactly like downstairs, and he moves me into a room as spacious as the previous one where the decor is more neutral and masculine.

“Feel free to bring the bedding, cushions, whatever. We can also pick up some decorations in town when we have some time.”

“I’m not redecorating,” I protest. “I’m a guest, remember?”

“You’re staying hereindefinitely,” Roman specifies. "No reason not to make yourself comfortable.”

It definitely sounds too close to moving in, and I need everyone to understand I’m not doing that. If I did, I’d need to pay rent and bills, and I can’t afford to. As for just accepting their charity, that’s out of the question. They might be insanely generous, but that doesn’t mean I won’t stand on my own two feet.

I can accept staying for the summer in exchange for pet sitting; it’s definitely unbalanced—to my advantage—but thankfully, I have something to offer that way.

After I’ve put away my belongings, Rom pops by again to ask me if I need a lift into town.

“Oh, don’t trouble yourself on my account; I was going to catch the bus.”

To get to the pet store, in the south side of Thorn Falls—southie—I can either walk four miles, or take the bus. The main road would be faster, but students race through it so fast, and there’s no sidewalk to speak of, so it’s much safer to go around. Besides, I might enjoy hiking, but the road from campus into town isn’t particularly nice to look at, and it’s too hot outside. I’d arrive all sweaty.

I was going to catch the bus in about ten minutes. There’s only one per hour, less so on weekends, but it takes me close to the store.

He rolls his eyes. “I’m heading out—my mother wants to see me. It’s no trouble to drive you two miles out of my way, Sarah.”

“In that case, thanks, yes, please.”

These people are seriously too much. In the light of yesterday and this morning, I think I finally am starting to understand why: they…likeme. Or rather, they like the idea of fucking me. People are always nicer to those they want to see naked—at least until they get their fill.
