“If your idea is that bad, let’s not do it,” I chirp anxiously.

Marius was right to wait until I was a bit calmer than usual to broach the subject. I’m currently panicking, so I can’t imagine the state I’d be in if he’d broached that subject before food, wine, and orgasms.

“It’snotbad,” he objects as we’re back in that fancy, large hallway. “But you won’t like it.”

That does nothing to appease my apprehension. “Why?”

“This way,” he says, leading us up the marble staircase. “Because, Sarah, my solution puts you in the spotlight. It’s much safer than the shadows: everyone in town will know who you are. No one can attack you if everyone is always staring at you.”

My brows furrow in confusion. “People don’t look at me. I’m no one.”

“They will,” Marius assures me. “Because you’re going to stop running away from me, darling. You’re going to show to the world what you are.” His grin widens. “Mine.”

SARAH

He’s freaking persistent, I have to give him that.

It turns out, we have that in common.

“I’m not your anything, Marius,” I say, sounding exhausted to my own ears. Before he can protest the moot point, I add, “But I understand your idea. Whoever it is, they’re hiding behind a screen while perving on me and demanding your money. You want to bring them out.”

Slowly, he inclines his head. “We can agree on the second point. But you are mine, Sarah. I’ve let you pretend otherwise for too long. All it achieved was getting Rhys’s dick wetter than mine.”

My jaw tightens. “I’ll do whatever I please with my pussy—and my hands, and my mouth, and myassfor that matter.”

I emphasize the“my”each time.

That only serves to make him laugh. “Suit yourself, your highness. I’ll certainly enjoy proving my point each time you make me.”

I flush, wondering if he’s referring to the pet store bullshit or the drowning. Likely both.

I can’t remember one single moment as embarrassing as when I was coming, unable to keep quiet, right in front of Larry. But I didn’t get in trouble. Control freak that he is, Marius had the situation sorted out before it began. As for the pool…

Yeah, it was terrifying, objectively—at first. But I pinched and he stopped. Something moves in my chest at the memory, while heat pools between my thighs.

I’m fairly certain whateverpointhe makes, I stand to benefit.

He pushes open double doors, leading us inside a trendy bar. Like in the restaurant, I recognize celebrities everywhere I look, mixed up with a few Rothford students I’ve never talked to.

I notice that everyone I see is ridiculously pretty, and dressed in clothing worth more than an average family’s mortgage. Is that a prerequisite for being able to join their club?

I really don’t belong here.

The crowd is also on the young side, no one pushing past thirty.

“So many people.”

Marius inclines his head.

“Yeah, there are various Heritage establishments on the West Coast, but Thorn Falls is the largest. It’s pretty quiet during the week, but many people come from all over the state and beyond on weekends,” he says over the heavy beat of the music.“Which makes it perfect for tonight,” Marius says. “Our dating debut.”

I send him a look, but the smug dick just smirks. “I’ll be with you most of the time, and when I’m not, people will be looking at you because you’re my girlfriend. You’ll never be vulnerable.”

A shudder runs through me.

That’s my idea of a nightmare. I already have panic attacks almost every day, simply imagining that someone’s following me when I know that I’m invisible in this school. If people actually paid attention to me, I’d have a heart attack inside of a week.
