SARAH

Irush after Marius, although he’s forging ahead, and one of his steps is three of mine.

“You can’t possibly just barge in uninvited!” I squeal.

All other concerns aside, it’s not my place. Rhys, Vi, and Rom might have allowed me to stick around because of my stalker, but I can’t just bring guys to their house without giving them any notice or asking for their permission. It’s downright rude. The very thought makes my heart race in my chest.

I mean, I don’t think they’d say no, especially considering the fact that it’s Marius, but letting someone in without telling them first just doesn’t sit well with me. They’re private people. For good reason.

To be fair, Marius knows what’s happening in those four walls.

“Marius!” I call as he reaches the door, completely ignoring me.

I’m stunned to watch him input the overlong code. I didn’t think they handed it over to anyone.

“Who said I wasn’t invited?” he tosses over his shoulder, just as Blue bounces into the hallway, barking happily.

I snap my jaw shut.

“Well, are you coming in or what? It’s my understanding I can’t keep the door open for long. Pets, right?”

The pittie mix wags her tail, looking expectantly at Marius, who promptly gets to his knees to scratch her ears.

I clear my throat, spotting Orion racing down the staircase.

“Right,” I echo, making my way inside.

I shouldn’t be so shocked. Marius was Roman’s, Rhys’s, and Violet’s friend long before I even walked into town. Given how generous they are, it’s hardly surprising that they’d let him stay if he asked.

Besides, something tells me Violet would love pushing us together. Just like she did last week at the farm.

I thought she was teasing at first, but it’s possible she might actually be trying her hand at matchmaking, which is worse.

I enter the dark house, and Marius shuts the door behind us. “When did you ask to stay here?”

I don’t ask why he didn’t warn me. This infuriating man loves to shock me at every turn too much for me to think it’s unintentional.

“Ask?” He scoffs. “I told Rhys I’d stay here as long as you are, too.”

He’s so unbearably arrogant. “And he didn’ttellyou to fuck all the way off?”

“Oh, I did.” Rhys’s voice comes from the second floor. I look up, finding him leaning on the banister. “But Goltz is a little shit.”

“Camden Hunt manages my investment portfolio.” Marius winks, unapologetic. “I don’t often hear no from him.”

He’s so sneaky.

“Sorry,” I mutter at Rhys, who’s making his way down the spiral stairway. “I can stay somewhere else if you prefer.”

Rhys rolls his eyes. “Don’t sweat it, sweetheart. I can handle this asshole.”

When he’s close, I note a bruise on his jaw that definitely wasn’t there earlier today.

“What happened?” I say, reaching for his face.

Marius grasps my wrist before I can touch him, which only serves to make Rhys smirk.
