I think they were trying to make you break up with Sarah, and also…potentially catch her. The more I think about it, the more likely it feels. As they both fought off my hacking attemptsanddrove, there’s at least two people involved. Maybe we’re looking at a gang? Trafficking?

It’s bad, Marius. Keep her safe.

I immediately understand how my brother connected the dots to a work company: there are thousands of people who study here, but they don’t just drive off in the middle of the day, especially traveling that far, right at the moment when then didn’t get what they wanted.

A work company makes sense. They’d have a legitimate reason to be there, and also not to stick around. Plus, that would explain the team thing.

Next we need to work out what companies were working for Rothford University today. Catering? The cleaning crew? A professor?

It would also explain why they’d find victims all over the state. That theory is getting more logical by the minute.

I shut off the volume of my phone and go to check the folder.

Like the previous ones, the videos are neatly labelled chronologically. What I see makes me sick. Physicallysick. All the girls were on the young side, but I know what Sarah looks like at nineteen. The first videos were takenyearsago.

I skip ahead, click on a few just to see what we’re dealing with. A lot of her touching herself. Others with that fuckhead, Brandon. He wasn’t gentle, but there was no art to the way he fucked. He just jackhammered her like a twelve-year-old desperate to come and uninterested in the other person’s pleasure. It wasn’t rape, but it is still uncomfortable to watch. Sarah looked various shades of bored through it all.

I note that Brandon’s face is carefully cut off or pixelated.

Morgan was right: it’s bad, and we can’t let those videos get out. They’d fuck up any girl’s future.

After thinking for a moment, I decide to get ahead of this mess. Not only would it affect her future; it could affect her futurewith meif I’m not careful.

I do what I have to do regretfully.

Me: I have a problem.

Pa: Again?

Me: Same one. Different day.

Pa: What did I say about not wasting my time, Marius?

Me: The stalker has videos of Sarah, and tried to post them. Our hacker stopped it. But there’s a chance they could go through next time.

The next reply takes a long, long time to arrive.

Pa: I am getting sick and tired of this girl. Are you sure she’s worth the effort?

Me: Yes.

Me: I love her.

Me: What if it was Ma?

The last one is below the belt, but it’s the only thing that could truly make him understand my position.

Pa: Bring her to the house tomorrow at noon. I’ll judge if she’s worth the waste of resources.

I stare at my screen, teeth clenched. I know my father. I know exactly what he has in mind.

Me: You don’t have to test her.

Pa: You’re not asking me to protect her, you’re asking the Heritage to spend effort and major funds on a girl who isn’t one of us. Even if I was willing to help her, they will shoot it down.

My gaze drifts to the girl asleep next to me, and I bring my hand to my head, suddenly exhausted.
