“And I’m his ride.”

Before anyone can point out that Markus could use any of the spare cars in the garage, or call one of the drivers, I rush out of the room.

Magnus clears his throat. “I should also—”

“Sit.” My mother is adamant. “What is this I hear about Riley wanting a divorce, hm?”

I can’t help smiling as I rush through the entry hall.

“Who spilled the beans to Ma?”

“Who do you think?” Markus replies, rolling his eyes.

Of course he’d be the one sinking our brother in deep waters.

“You’re a dick,” I tell him as we reach the car.

“A dick who didn’t chuck Sarah to the wolves today,” he points out as he gets into the passenger seat.

I wince, reminded of the debt I now owe him. “What do you want?”

He shrugs. “You’ll figure it out soon enough.”

I drive in silence, except for the sound of his fingers drumming against the dashboard impatiently.

The Markus I used to know didn’t need anyone. He never sought the company of others, although people gravitate toward him like moths to the brightest flame. These days, he can’t even last a few hours without his Daisy. It’s insane.

We reach the Shark House, where he left his bike.

Before starting the engine, Markus calls out a name I haven’t heard in forever. “Rio?”

Rio.

Once upon a time, before all his lessons paid off, Magnus couldn’t properly say my name—or Markus’s. So we were Rio and Gus.

Back when my brothers and I were a team, before we were taught to become competition.

“Yeah?”

“Tread carefully with the chick. I don’t think we have all the answers yet.”

We don’t, but I’ll get them out of her.

“I got this,” I assure him.

I went through training just like he did. If I didn’t know how to make people talk, I’d be dead by now.

He hesitates, but nods and hides his pretty face under the dark helmet, before flying through the night at high speed.

SARAH

My conversation with Violet did a lot to settle my nerves, but all the same, I literally turned on my heels and sprinted in the other direction to avoid Riley on Wednesday.

Rude, certainly, but I don’t think she saw me. And even if she did, I just couldn’t deal with her. What she’s seen me do. What sheapprovedof. It's a very different story than Violet willingly getting freaky with however many people.

To be fair, Violet didn't seem too put out or shocked about it either.
