Given everything she knows transpired between us, I’m surprised she’d be in favor for him taking me. But then again, I know enough of her relationship with Rhys to realize that my friend isn’t exactly what one can call sane.

“I’d rather chew off my own hand than accept a favor from Marius,” I reply, pointedly addressing her and ignoring his presence, like he did to me earlier.

It might not be very mature, but it’s so satisfying.

“You deep throated my cock like a porn star and swallowed my cum like a good girl,” he retorts casually, not bothering to lower his voice. “The way I see it, I’m the one who owes you a favor. I used you. You can use my muscles and my car for ten minutes.”

I reach for his iced latte, between us on the table, rip the lid off and chuck the content all over him.

Violet gasps, then giggles, but Marius’s expression never shifts, his gaze burning holes through my skull.

He stands, his full height towering over me even more than usual. I can’t help it: I shiver.

“Oh, Sarah. You should know better than to start a game you can’t finish.”

With these parting words, he turns on his heels, waving on his way out.

Dramatic asshole.

SARAH

When I said my earthly possessions could be packed in two suitcases, I overestimated how many belongings I have. My clothes and shoes don’t even fill the first. In the second, I put my books, computer and the contents of my fridge. There’s plenty of room to spare; I could have fitted it all in one, really.

“Don’t you have your own sheets?” Violet marvels, staring at the plain, standard-issue blanket on my bed.

I shrug. “What’s the point of spending money on things like bedding when the dorm provides some?”

Violet’s obvious pity when she glances at the plain covers on my mattress greatly amuses me. It’s just fine, to me, but clearly, the Thorn Fall princess considers school-issued linens scarcely short of torture.

I smile, thoroughly amused.

She does her best to hide her disgust. “Well, you can leave those,” Violet says primly. “The guest rooms are furnished.”

And no doubt, include fancy comforters. “Then I’m done.”

“We reallydidn’tneed Marius and all his muscles!”

My jaw tightens. There’s no situation where I could possibly need Marius Goltz. And if I did? I’d find my own way in any case. I’ve gotten out of many stickier situations than lugging suitcases around, by my own damn self.

And now I’m no longer alone. I have friends. People who have offered a hand, no strings attached. And sure, asking for it makes me a charity case, but I’d rather take pity over owing favors to a man like him.

I let Violet take care of the lighter of the two suitcases—the one with my clothing—and I wince, watching her huff and puff. I shouldn’t have enlisted her help. I might be used to doing things myself, but she isn’t; my pride shouldn’t affect her.

“You can leave it here,” I offer as we reach the elevator. “I don’t mind making two trips to the car.”

She pouts. “Yours is like, twice as heavy. I’ll be fine.” I’m not the only one with a heightened sense of pride. “You’re not even breaking a sweat. How are you so strong?”

“Try lugging huge bags of cat litter and dog food at a shelter every day for, like, ten months. Those things are at least forty pounds, and we moved dozens every day.” I grin. “Who needs the gym, right?”

She whistles as the elevators take us down to the ground floor. “And you worked there every day, no exception?”

I bob my head up and down. “Yeah, it’s the least I could do. Dorothy, the owner, let me stay in her flat, rent free. She never asked for anything in exchange, but I wanted to help her.”

I swallow a lump; I hate having left the shelter behind...but I needed out of that town. And to be fair, the shelter’s in much a better state thanks to the Thorn Falls socialites taking it under their wing. Their money turned things around.

“Besides, it felt good to help the animals.”
