CHAPTERONE

Charlie

“I’ve gotta pee so bad,” I whine, wiggling in my seat.

A finger pokes the back of my head where it lays against the headrest.

“You’re such a fucking child,” Jason huffs. “This is the second time you’ve needed to go during an eight-hour ride. You have the bladder of a twelve-year-old girl.”

“No.” I glare at him over my shoulder. “I have the bladder of a twenty-year-old who drank four cups of coffee to stay awake all night because her roommates insisted on continuing a tradition we’ve had every year during college of being exhausted on our first day of vacation.” Now, I’m the one huffing.

I’m too tired to bite my tongue with him.

A finger pokes at my head again. Smiling, I turn and capture it with my forefinger, squinting my eyes as I pull the digit gently. “Remind me again why we are doing this at Halloween?”

“Because we all got busy over the summer. You worked, Laura worked, I vacationed, and we all suck.” Amy smiles back. “This is the only weekend we could get together. But we did it!” Amy squeals, wiggling our fingers. “We are officially seniors! One more year and we’ll be ready to enter the real world.”

“If you pass and can get a job,” Jason mumbles.

“You know, you’re a great boyfriend. I’m always telling Amy how supportive you are,” I snark.

“Come here,” he tells Amy, pulling her close with an arm wrapped around her shoulders and leaving his hand hanging dangerously close to her chest. “I just don’t want you to get your hopes up and then fail.” Placated, she cuddles into his side. “Besides, it’s not like Laura isn’t just gonna get a job at her daddy’s company after she’s finished bumming around Europe. But you were right, you do suck.” He winks.

Gross.

Seeing my face, he grins. “And I’m always telling Amy if you were less sarcastic and put out more, you wouldn’t be single.” The sole of his foot connects with my seat. “Maybe if you jump on Dale’s dick, you’d be less of a bitch,” he says, nodding at his friend beside me.

“And maybe if you had a bigger dick, you’d be less of a prick,” I whisper.

Another kick to my seat says he heard me.

“Kick the seat again, and we won’t have to stop!” I warn him. My bladder really is full. “And for the record, Laura worked really hard at summer camp. You’d know that if you hadn’t spent most of the time harassing the female counselors and getting high with the local loser.” I attack back. Meeting Laura’s gaze in the rearview mirror, I see how his comments stabbed at her insecurity. And the bitch in me lashes out again. “Don’t be bitter just because your daddy skipped out on you.”

The look he sends me gives me chills.

“Ignore him, babe. He’s just playing.” Dale’s heavy hand squeezes my knee. “Don’t worry if you get scared. You can bunk with me.” He winks.

I push his hand off my knee, giving a small smile to soften the blow. “I think I’ll be okay.”

I’m not interested. I wasn’t a week ago when this was a girls-only trip, and I’m still not, even if my roommates have turned this into a couples trip.

Well, two couples plus Dale and me.

“You didn’t really flirt with the women there, did you, baby?” Amy asks in a small voice.

“You know I didn’t. I was too busy calling you whenever I was free,” he placates.

“I wish I could have been there.” She sulks.

“I know, me too, but you just didn’t apply early enough. I showed you how much I missed you when I got home, though, didn’t I?”

Gag!

“Besides, if I hadn’t worked at the camp, we wouldn’t have somewhere to stay on this little trip.” He jangles the cabin keys.

“Tell me again how you managed to get the keys?” Now I’m pouting. “I barely saw you working all summer.”

He smirks, and Amy answers for him. “Because he’s charming and has never met a woman who can say no to him.”
