I had been equal parts proud and horrified to hear her version of events. And she’d told it with such matter-of-fact anger, like he’d ruined her plans and inconvenienced her instead of nearly killing her.

After they left, I stood from my seat by the window and reached for her hand. She looked up at me with fury and hurt mingling in the tears along her bottom lashes. “Amos, excuse my Goddamn French, but I’m glad that fucker is behind bars.” Her voice sounded harsh like a cicada drone. The anticholinergic medications we had used to help open her airways dried up moisture in her body, and it made her voice dry and raspy.

I exhaled a short chuckle. “The audacity, Matthews.”

“What did you have planned for him, anyway?” she asked with a little frown. “I mean, before I went Karate Kid on his face.”

“WhatdoI have planned for him?” I corrected with a half-smile. “There’s plenty of damage left to accomplish. But don’t worry about that right now. You’ve done more than enough today.”

June sighed, leaning her head back against the pillows as her fingers drummed against the back of my hand. “Hospitals take forever to get people discharged. How much longer?”

I sat down on the edge of her bed and quirked an eyebrow. “You mean ‘how many days?’”

“Haha,” she said, rolling her eyes. I blinked at her pointedly. She gave me a round-eyed glare. “Youarejoking, aren’t you?”

“Do I strike you as a comedian, Matthews?”

“You’re hilarious if you’re suggesting I sit in this bed for fu-fudging days,” she glared.

A small smile pulled at the corners of my mouth. “Why did the vampire’s queen end up in the hospital for three days?”

She glowered. “Why, Brady?”

“Her breathing sucked.”

She threw a pillow at me and howled in pain. “Where’s Archer? Tell him to come back and stab me for real. I’d rather die than live with someone who’s jokes are that bad.”

I caught the pillow, and laughing with her, I brought my eyebrows practically up to my hairline. “June Cupcake Ella Matthews, whatdid you just say? Live with whom, now?”

Her pale, freckled cheeks turned pink. “Uh…”

I leaned forward, my features mischievous. “Who do you want to live with?” She sucked her lips in, blinking once. I grinned and lowered my voice. “Use your words, June.”

A slow smile crept up her delicate features. “I’ve been thinking about the merits of living with the vampire overlord.”

I kissed her neck just above her racing pulse. “Yum.”

Twenty Five

“You’re doingwhat?” Liz screeched over the phone.

I pulled the receiver away from my ear, wincing. “Sis, decibels,” I reminded her.

“You’re moving inwith your asshole boss?” she reiterated.

I waved goodbye to the mover as he left Amos’ apartment after depositing the last of my boxes. “Well, kind of. But I told you, he’s the good kind of asshole. He’s an asshole to everyone else and, eh, different with me.”

“What kind of different?” Liz asked dubiously.

“Like he has an addiction to cupcakes, and I happen to be the only edible cupcake in the entire world different,” I said wryly.

“Ohfuck,you love him,” she said.

I shifted my gaze around like someone would hear. But Amos was in surgery again, and the movers had all left after carrying all five boxes’ worth of my stuff into the apartment from their pickup truck. “Yeah, I might,” I admitted, leaning my head against the front door I still had propped open with my ass.

“I leave you fortwo weeks,” she groaned. “Baby girl, you can’t move in with a boy you just met.”
