I closed my notebook and walked over to her. “May I?”

She scrunched her eyes suspiciously and then handed me one of the books. The first sketch was the shirt she was wearing now. I flipped through and there were several versions of the same shirt. All with something uniquely different. Her art was on point and the details were flawless. “I’m sensing a theme here.” I smiled.

“See what I mean?” She threw her hands up in frustration.

“These are really freakin’ good.” We needed a designer like this for the surf shop, but I didn’t dare bring that up. Casen had drama written all over her, and that was definitely something we didn’t need in the company.

“Thanks.” She flashed a grateful smile that disappeared quickly.

An uncomfortable silence fell between us, so I said, “Thanks for the notes,” as I headed to the door.

“Hey, Grady?”

I didn’t know why, but chills ran down my spine when she said my name. I turned to her.

“Thanks for not listening,” she said gently.

I nodded, not trusting anything I would say. I wasn’t ready for this kind of thing, whether it was just a friendship or leading to a random hookup. I didn’t want it. I didn’t need it.

When I got back to the apartment, I snatched up my phone and dropped down on the couch. I opened the photos and scrolled through the last set of images of Tessa and me. Her eyes glowed with vitality and her heart shone through her smile. It was still so hard to imagine the world without her. To imagine my life without her. It was damn near impossible, and it still hurt like hell.
