“Ding, ding! Good job.”

“Let’s go!” I cheer, and Lennox’s brows raise before she bursts into giggles.

“Shhhhh!” She covers her mouth with her hand.

“What? We’re not at the library.”

“It’s not a party either. Jaime and Tim, the other night supervisor, like quiet. Trust me, I’ve had my fair share of shut the hell up, complete with a murderous look. Jaime can be scary. I heard once she got so mad, she made all the staff pull an all-nighter and clean the lab from top to bottom,” Lennox says without a trace of laughter, a dead serious look on her face.

“No way. She seems pretty chill to me.”

“Yeah, wait till you get on her bad side.”

I study Lennox and try to get a read on her when suddenly she bursts into laughter. Talk about being quiet—not.

“You ate that shit up. Hook, line, and sinker.” She continues to laugh, and I shake my head, unable to hold my own laughter back. Hers is too damn contagious.

“Jaime’s cool as shit. She would never do that. As long as it doesn’t get rowdy and sound like a party is going on, we’re cool. Now back to the quiz.” She tosses me a wink, and it’s fucking cute as hell. Damn, this girl and her fucking cute shit.

Before she can ask me another question, I blurt out, “Are you going on the ski trip next month with everyone?”

“Yes, I wouldn’t miss it. You?”

I ignore the thrill zipping through me. “Yep. I feel like we’ve been planning it forever.”

“It does feel that way. Do you know if Madison and Asher have decided to go? The last time I asked Chloe, she wasn’t sure. It just doesn’t feel the same without them or Mason.”

“I know. When I hang out with the guys now, which seems to happen less often lately, it doesn’t feel right. Like we’re not a complete circle anymore. Asher’s either in class or at work. And Mason, man…he was the glue who held us together.”

“Yeah, he was special like that, wasn’t he?”

“He really was. He could see the good in anyone.”

“That he could. Like his girlfriend, Sienna. I’ve always wondered about her.”

“I don’t know enough about her. Remi mentioned her a couple of times, but mostly just that she’s having a hard time.”

Lennox looks like she wants to roll her eyes, but she doesn’t. “I bet she is. While I’m not sure what to think about her, she did seem to love Mason in her own way. I miss Madison, but I totally understand if she doesn’t come back. My heart hurts for her.”

“I hope they decide to go. Maybe it’ll help.”

Lennox opens her mouth to reply when her phone pings with a text. She quickly scans it, and her face lights up. “Yessss,” she whispers under her breath, and I wonder what’s gotten her so hyped.

“Good news?” I ask, being nosy.

“Everleigh just reminded me about the annual toga party tonight at one of the fraternities. I almost forgot! Good thing we’re already prepared. We’ve always wanted to go but missed it for the past two years. We even have our outfits ready to go.”

“A toga party, huh? I hear those get pretty wild.”

Lennox claps and bounces up and down in her seat. “Eek! I know. Want to go with us? We can whip you up a toga real quick. We’ll just need a white sheet.”

It’s only the middle of the week, our semester just started yesterday, and I have a jam-packed schedule tomorrow. Back-to-back classes starting in the morning and not ending until mid-afternoon. Then I’m back here, where I picked up the evening shift. If I go to this party, I’ll be hurting tomorrow, and I hate being hungover in class. It’s the worst. “Nah, I’m good. My schedule is tight tomorrow.”

“Aw, c’mon, Holden. It’ll be so much fun. You don’t have to stay late or drink. Just come hang out for a bit.”

As tempting as it is, because for some damn reason I want to spend as much time with her as possible, I still know I’ll be the one pissed at myself tomorrow and dragging my nauseous hungover ass to class. Or maybe just my tired ass but still. “My plans tonight are Xbox and early bed.”

“Xbox? Really?” Lennox side-eyes me. “The college experience is a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”
