Prologue

Dan’thiel

Her body moves with mine, two thrumming beats syncing to the same orgasmic rhythm. Malicryn lifts her pouty pink lips to mine. Her long white hair encircles her like a halo, contrasting with her almost-lavender skin. She digs her nails deeper into the muscles of my arms. My pace quickens as my chest rumbles from the low growl in my throat.

A pang of guilt rips through my heart as I stare into her soft, white eyes. Our last night together hangs over us, an unrelenting burden.

She purrs into my ear, as if reading my expression.

“I don’t want you to go.”

“Mal, Chromeus himself couldn’t keep me away if I had a choice.”

Her eyes narrow by a fraction. Something flickers across her face and disappears just as fast. What was that?

I open my mouth to ask, but her lips capture my question. Eager. My mind goes blank as her grassy scent fills my nose. Her tongue tastes like honey on mine.

A low growl escapes the depths of my throat. My desire builds. My movements become faster. Deeper. She moans into my mouth as I embed myself into her deepest parts. Breaking our kiss, she throws her head back, letting out a wild scream.

“Dan’thiel!” she screams my name, hissing the end out on a long, drawn-out shriek.

My lips find her nipple, and I suck it into my mouth. I’m losing control. My muscles clench while she wraps her legs around my waist. I move faster. Frantic. Frenzied.

A guttural sound leaves my throat as I empty myself inside her. My ragged breaths are each punctuated with a harsh grunt. Malicryn moves her hips to milk every drop of my essence into her as the tension in my body dissipates.

Collapsing on top of my would-be bride, I press my face into her neck, letting her scent fill me.

“I’ll miss you.”

The muscles in her shoulders tighten as I pepper her clammy skin with light kisses, taking a moment to collect the memory of our last night together. Framing it to hang on the wall of my mind.

A rush of anger floods my chest. Why would the Gods choose anyone but Malicryn as my fated mate? We’re perfectly matched in passion and ambitions. She’s a fierce general and leader to her people, like I used to be.

“Will you, Danny?”

Her sweet voice drains the anger from my core at once, leaving only grief behind. I pull back, pouring into her gaze. “What does that mean? Of course, Mal.”

She flicks an eyebrow as if she doubts me. Before I can correct this, a knock at the door startles me. I roll off Malicryn, looking toward the demanding noise. She answers the call with dangerous ice in her voice, such a stark contrast to seconds before.

“Come.”

Five of her personal guards enter the bedchamber dressed in the black leather armor of the Ralvore. My heart rate spikes with anxiety. Something’s gone wrong. The city must be under attack. There’s no time to cover my nakedness. I stand quickly to receive the message on Malicryn’s behalf.

Instead, the guards create an offensive formation between me and where Mal still lies unperturbed on the bed. My eyes dart from her to her guardsmen, but she won’t meet my eye.

“Explain,” I command the highest-ranking officer in the group before me. Captain Murdock, I believe his name is. The thunder of my voice echoes throughout the room. These elite Elven guards stand their ground, not even flinching as they earn my ire.

As the seconds pass, my heart sinks to my gut.

“Malicryn?”

I hate the way my voice shakes when I say it, but finally she meets my eye with a raised chin. Her arched eyebrow and narrowed eyes are full of malice, and a cruel smile plays at the edges of her lips.

“This is your own fault, Danny.”

“My fault... Why? Mal, you took me in after I lost everything.”

My brain clouds. The room spins. My world spins.
