“If you weren’t such a prick, I’d be more inclined to let you.” A mischievous smile tugs at her lips, dancing in her eyes. Her chest rises with heaving breaths as the flush in her cheeks slides back down. The scent of her hot desire fills my nose. My eyes bounce back and forth between hers, looking for something else but finding nothing.

“You sure? With that kind of Chroma between us, I’d do things to you that would break your understanding of your own body. You’d be hoarse from screaming my name when I was done with you. Pin you down and force you to come on my hand, my tongue… my cock until I finally released my seed deep inside of you, filling you with a power of your own.”

Her eyes glaze over, undoubtedly picturing me between her legs. Wondering how my breath feels on her thighs. The way she’ll open to me, enveloping my cock as she stretches around it.

She sucks her bottom lip between her teeth, and I feel my muscles tense up, expecting the coming bond. But as her eyes meet mine again, the twinkle of amusement blossoming sets me on edge.

“I’m good. Thanks though.”

My chest clenches at the flippant dismissal as I watch her hop out of the bed, landing with a thud, to dress for the day. With a growl of frustration, I drop my head back onto my pillow. I clench my teeth and fists at my side, trying to release some pent-up energy.

I haven’t lived a pious or even good life, but I’m not sure I’ve done anything to deserve this impish creature for a fated mate. She delights in teasing and torturing me.

I blow out a slow breath, preparing myself for the conversation ahead.

Chapter Twenty-One

Sunder

After a slow morning trying to ignore the pressure building up in my very blue balls, we get on the road back to the city. I let the comfortable silence settle between us for an hour before bringing up the pink elephant between us.

“Mira, it’s been a week. What’s your decision about Illuemera?”

She gasps dramatically, “It speaks!”

Rolling my eyes, I grumble under my breath about her humor being a constant source of irritation, but she ignores me.

“If you can’t handle an hour of silence, then Illuemera is going to kick your ass, mate.”

The bitterness in my tone was unintentional, but the condescension was dagger-sharp, poised over her heart. I narrow my eyes, waiting for the argument.

Why do I do this to myself?

Mira huffs.

“Listen, dude. It’s not my fault you got all hot and bothered groping me this morning. I’m the one who should be mad. But no, you didn’t get what you wanted, so now you have to pout and storm around slamming shit like a toddler having a tantrum.”

My white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel shifts to the left, further from her. The heat is boiling beneath my skin, rage simmering like a stew left over the fire for far too long. It bubbled and roiled, close to flowing over.

But I maintain control, clamping down on the frustration with an iron grip. I won’t let her goad me into another argument so she can weasel out of giving me an answer.

I sit quietly and wait.

After a few moments, Mira lets out a heavy sigh that fills the car, waking up that nasty rat curled up in her lap. From my periphery, I see his head dart up, looking for her eyes. When she pets him, the low purr from the beast sends my hackles up.

“I’ll go with you. But I have to tie up some loose ends here first. I’ll start by putting in a three-week notice tomorrow when I’m back in the office.”

Three weeks? Just to leave a menial position that has no impact on the world?

“A three-week notice? For what purpose? Who cares about a job here?”

“I do! This job has been my life for years, and I’ve worked hard for it. I’m not going to leave my co-workers out to dry on these projects just because you can’t wait a few more weeks. I need to write up docs and do some knowledge transfer. I’m not going to screw them over.”

Her firm tone is unrelenting, and I know she won’t budge. Logically, I know I should be happy she’s agreeing to come at all.

“You’re infuriating in the worst ways,” I say flatly.

Mira smiles at me with that dancing twinkle in her eye, hinting she’s delighted at my annoyance. After her mocking bow, I just huff and roll my eyes again. Sometimes, the only way to meet an enemy on the battlefield is to play their own game.
