Page 94 of Reckless Bonds

A dampening slams between us, and I can no longer move. I watch in horror as they rip her clothes off and throw her naked to the floor. Mira groans from the rough treatment, but she never takes her eyes off mine.

Yurghen’s hold on me pulls me down to the ground until I’m hovering just on top of her.

“It’s okay. Just do it. The bond can help us,” she whispers.

“It didn’t work with Sunder. Why would it work with me?” I reply.

“Wait. What did you say? There was a failed bond before the successful one?” Yurghen asks, eyes alight with keen interest. I look at Mira, who grimaces.

Damn.

I guess that was a secret. I’m not used to guarding my tongue.

“Take the shifter back to his cage. I’ll deal with him later. Right now, I need to have a talk with my little human pet.”

I scream as I’m bound by magic.

They’re taking me from her.

And I’m going to fight like hell to get back.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Sunder

Awareness blossoms, and I know instantly that this is a Dreamshare. They always feel different. Real, but obviously not. Chroma dancing at the edge of my vision. A connectedness fills me.

Mira appears a few paces away, her dress so thin that I can see the outline of her curves. Relief floods over me as my feet carry me towards her. Her hazel eyes widen in surprise when she spots me, but her smile is genuine and warm.

I wrap my arms around her, squeezing tight. There’s no Chroma flowing between us this time. Instead, I can feel it buzzing around us, like the forest itself is alive. But her body is warm against mine.

“I’m so sorry,” I whisper into her hair. There’s no scent either.

Her arms wrap around my neck as a sob shakes her body. “Are you okay? Where are you?”

“I’m not sure. The last thing I remember is the library.”

She pulls back to look at my face, concern evident in her eyes. “Really? That must have been a week ago. Maybe more. You haven’t woken up yet?”

I shake my head just as a tall ginger-haired man appears in the doorway of a cottage. “Come in! There’s a warm fire inside.”

I position my body between Mira and the hulking figure, unsure and tense.

“It’s just Bobble.”

Mira swats at me playfully, giving me a soft smile as she walks around my protective stance to enter the stone cottage. I blink a few times, trying to connect the image of the little orange cat with the large male I just saw.

Following Mira inside, I glare at the Third. How dare he be bigger than me? He gives me a smile, which I do not return. Instead, my molars clamp shut. The muscles of my jaw, tightening.

He is not supposed to be more than I.

I watch as they hug, the man sobbing and saying sorry. I raise an eyebrow, leaning on the back of the closed wooden door, simply observing.

Mira hushes him, soothing his red mop of hair. Nausea stirs inside me as I cross my arms over my chest.

“I didn’t know. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”

“Didn’t know what?” This doesn’t sound good.
