At least we aren’t still driving. At least there will be no more accidents.

Has he already gotten me out of state?

Surely not. I can’t imagine he could drive the car very far in this condition. Especially because it would risk getting pulled over. Perhaps we did get pulled over, and I was passed out through my opportunity for escape.

How long have I been unconscious?

What if he abandoned me? What if I’m going to die here, trapped?

That’s when I hear his voice.

“Stay in the car. I’m going to the door.”

“No way.” That’s Kassara. “I’m coming with you.”

Tears fill my eyes. It’s a hallucination. It has to be.

I fight with all my strength to move my hand, but I can’t. I release a sound that feels more like a gurgle than a scream.Please.

“Did you hear that?” It’s him again. I’m sure of it. Then again, my head is currently stuck to the back of the seat in my own blood, so how can I be sure of anything?

“What?”

“A sound. It sounded like someone crying.”

I do it again, pushing noise from my throat with force.“Aghhh…”

“I heard it,” Kassara confirms.

“It’s coming from the car.”

Then, they’re close. They’re so close I can practically smell his cologne.

“Aghhh…” I cry again, the sound ripping from my chest. It hurts. It all just hurts.

“Is it possible?” Kassara asks. “Dec, if she’s in there… There’s no way.”

I want to bang on the roof, to scream and cry tears of joy, to warn them, to say, “I’m here! I’m right here!” But I can’t. I feel myself slipping out of consciousness again, and it’s all I can do to fight it.

“This is his car,” he says firmly. “Check the plate.”

“What do we do?”

“Excuse me, what the hell do you think you’re doing?” Chris has joined the conversation.

“Chris?”

“Kassara? What on earth are you doing here?” His voice is calmer. Perfectly polite. Like he’s seeing an old friend.

“I need you to open your trunk,” Declan tells him firmly, interrupting the reunion.

Yes. Yes.Open the trunk. Find me. Save me.

“Well, as you can see, I was rear-ended in a parking lot today. The person responsible didn’t even have the decency to stop and leave their information. With the damage, opening my trunk is impossible.” If I didn’t know better, I’d swear he was innocent. He sounds so incapable of harm. “Do you mind telling me what seems to be the problem, Officer?”

“Open your back door, then. I need access to your trunk.”

Chris’s tone turns cold. “Do you have a warrant? Kassara, what’s going on? What are you doing at my sister’s house in the middle of the night?”
