Slowly, she pulls back, and we stare at each other. It is dark now; the sun has set and the only light we have is from the skyline downtown.Leaning forward, I kiss her one more time, savoring her bottom lip between mine for just a second longer until we break free, both of us breathing a little harder.

Then she loosens her hold and slides down the front of me until her feet hit the floor. There’s no mistaking how turned on this girl makes me, and as her forehead rests against my chest, her hands drift down my torso, pause on my hip bones, and then squeeze.

Rumi says, “The quieter you become, the more you can hear.” I’d like to think I’ve been listening to her through the silence. It’s her actions, her effort to right the wrongs and befriends with me that means the most. I know she regrets what happened in New York. I also know she’s been trying to make up for it, and her showing up here today speaks volumes.

As she wraps her arms around me one more time with her face pressed into my shirt, I run one hand down her braid while holding her against me, and she says, “It was really nice to see you. I’m looking forward to Austin.”

“Text me when you get to Atlanta,” I tell her.

And then she’s gone.

The door closes, and I’m standing here with my heart beating wildly, wondering if that really just happened.

CLAY AND EMMA

Emma: Would you rather go on an Alaskan cruise or a Caribbean cruise?

Clay: Am I allowed to say both?

Emma: No! You know you have to pick one.

Clay: Are we on this hypothetical cruise together?

Emma: Of course!

Clay: The Caribbean.

Emma: Really? I wouldn’t have picked that one for you. Why?

Clay: Bikini.

Emma: How’s Juliet’s house coming along?

Clay: Good. They’re all moved in. I finished the bookshelves last weekend.

Emma: That’s great! Is she happy?

Clay: To be continued…

Emma: What are you doing?

Clay: Just finished a few runs up at the resort.

Emma: How much longer are they open? It must be getting warm.

Clay: This weekend will be the last for the season. They always get one final rush of people, so I went today to avoid the crowds.

Emma: Do you ever go north or out west to get more slope time?

Clay: I have in the past. In Banff you can ski until the end of May.

Emma: If you ever want to go, I’ll go with you.

Clay: Noted.

Clay: What’s your biggest fear?
