We dove simultaneously for the porch, leaving the door wide open as we shifted and darted to the stairs leading into the yard. Brilliant trees jutted from the ground and towered around us as we dashed away from civilization. Nothing but the great earth bent to our will as we ran ceaselessly. Adrenaline circulated my body, enhancing my muscles, thickening my fur.

Yes, this was exactly what I had needed. For too long. I had been ignoring the urges of my animalistic side in favor of good business. Clients like mine didn’t demand a lot of attention, but I’d been pouring myself into my work, disregarding my most basic needs. I’d been neglecting my wolf—and I’d been neglecting Sadie as well.

I couldn’t believe the rush that filled me. Sadie galloped beside me, matching my speed. Every twist and turn was easily overcome. Hair like silky wheat caught the moonlight and drew me to her, carefully securing me to her side. On and on, we ran like we were glued together, like breaking apart would be our undoing.

Wouldn’t it, though? Her appearance in my life had been aptly timed. My return was marked by failure, but when I saw Sadie, I felt my purpose restore itself. I knew I had to have her, I had to own her, and I had to be the one bedding her each night. However that goal was reached didn’t quite matter to me.

Cool air gave me life as I dashed into an open field.

I was jealous, I admitted to her mentally.Seeing you hug him made me jealous.

Her giggles bounced through my mind.I know.

Well, she didn’t have to rub it in. She didn’t have to be coy about her affection either. At this point, our relationship hardly felt like a ruse at all. It was devotion unparalleled. It was a brand-new world.

I had her now. I couldn’t let her go. Nothing would tear her from my jaws. I would make sure of it.

Chapter 13 - Sadie

Every time my phone buzzed, I got closer to having a stroke. The thing was practically shattering the space-time continuum with how many messages my mother was sending me. Included in the usual medley of concerns was now my wedding colors and the date.

The thing about lying was it needed to hold the tiniest grain of the truth. Since Andres decided to announce our nuptials without asking, he left the planning to me—which meant I had to be the one dodging calls and texts galore from a family the size of another dimension. Because Turners could definitely take up a whole dimension by population alone.

I rubbed my forehead. Even with the window open behind me, the office felt too cramped and tiny. We had so much room. Why hadn’t we spread out yet?

Right as I lifted my head to ask, Andres held up his pencil. “Ask Raven.”

“How did you know I—?”

“Because I’m tired of being cramped too.”

Okay, that was just plain creepy. When had we started thinking so similarly? Our first week or so together had been wrought with conflict. But our run from a couple of days ago had apparently dissolved a boatload of stress.

I stared at him. “Get out of my head.”

“Aren’t we supposed to be married?”

“Not technically yet.”

He turned a playful grin toward me. “Shouldn’t you be getting on top of that?”

I grimaced as my phone started buzzing again. Or had it ever stopped? “Andres, I think I’m about to disconnect my phone service forever.”

“How about we start by changing your number?”

“My family would have a cow.”

He winked. “So, let them.”

“How can you be so cavalier about all this?”

Andres slid from his stool and tucked his pencil into the cup on his art desk. He lifted the sheet he had been working on—a playground for the back of the building that the new daycare center could use—and admired his own handiwork in the light coming through the window. A breeze rustled the edge of the page. He set it over my phone, making the screen lighting through the jungle gym.

I chuckled. “That’d be cute.”

“Yeah, actually, it would. I could probably engineer it to safely illuminate the grounds in the evening for the nocturnal kids.”

“That’s a nice idea. LEDs?”
