Sadie sighed for the fiftieth time. I peered at her over my newspaper. “Can I help you?”

“You could try to make me feel better.”

“Is it my job to cure your irritated mood?”

She cut her eyes up to the ceiling. “You could make dinner or something.”

“You can’t cook?”

“I can cook.”

I pointed to the kitchen. “Then make something for yourself. I’m not your butler.”

“I don’t get how you can afford a place like that hotel but don’t have any staff at home.”

“Why would I want staff at home? I can dress myself and clean my house.”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. I don’t get it.”

“Do your parents have maids?”

She laughed. “Well, no.”

“So, that’s it then.”

“That’s it…what?That doesn’t mean anything.”

I rustled the pages of the newspaper before folding it along the creases. After smudging my fingers with ink, I desperately wanted to wash them, but couldn’t bring myself to leave my recliner. Sadie had me pinned by sheer agitation.

“Your parents could afford that house,” I observed. “They could afford to throw a huge luncheon like that.”

She frowned. “That was a family effort. We all pitched in for it.”

“I don’t suppose it’s a family effort to fake those smiles.”

Her stare turned to pure trepidation. “Nobody was faking anything there except us.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“I should know what goes on with my family. I’m there a lot.”

I nodded. “Sure. Your mother has you under her thumb.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Exactly what I said, Sadie.”

She sneered while standing from the couch. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“You have such poor boundaries with your mother that you’ve let her run all over your life. You don’t even know what you want out of life. You don’t have any goals.”

“I was a successful aerobics instructor when we met.”

Just one small grin from me was enough to double her irritation. “Yet you came to be for the PA job all the same.”

“I wanted a change.”

“I know. That’s why I offered it to you.”
