He rustled the paper. “You’ve come back, I see.”

I stiffened. “How’d you know it was me?”

He slowly folded the paper, lining the creases perfectly with his fingers. “You were just in the garden. I saw you out the window.”

“Oh, right.”

“You sound disappointed.”

Did I? I guessed it was mildly disappointing. But I wasn’t even sure why. It wasn’t like he knew me by scent. “I just came to talk to you about the PA job.”

He swiveled the chair and leaned back, casually folding his hands in his lap. Crystal blue eyes sharpened with a criticism that made my knees feel weak. His slim muscular fit told me he worked out plenty, though I rarely saw him go to the gym room with everybody else. He didn’t say a word. And the longer he stayed quiet, the more I wanted to spill everything on the table about my life, my troubles, my goals.

That just didn’t sit right with me. Why in the world would I want to do that with an absolute stranger?

I stumbled over my words, and then I shivered like someone had shoved ice against the base of my spine. “I just…I was…”

Stop acting like a nervous teenager and just ask him about the pay.

Andres stood up and carefully walked around his desk while tucking his right hand into his pocket. Everything he did was smooth and calculated. Here I stood with my hands shoved together like I was about to start praying to the gods to deliver me from evil.

I shrugged off my anxiety, rested my hands at my sides, and grinned. “I was going to ask how much it pays.”

“I’ll start you off at $25 per hour and work it up from there based on performance. You’ll have a health benefits package as well as a 401(k). Dental and vision are included in your package.”

Good goddess, if he kept talking, I might start wobbling and end up on the ground in a puddle. I wasn’t sure if that was from sheer arousal or the fact that I wouldn’t have to worry about a thing with him.

Hehadpromised that I wouldn’t be concerned about my well-being. He sure did mean that, didn’t he?

Andres grinned while bowing his head forward slightly, just enough to darken his eyes while he looked at me. “Is something the matter, Sadie?”

“Nothing. Nope. I’m great.”

“Is there anything else you want included in your pay?”

I blinked a few times. “What?”

“Do you have any needs that I haven’t covered?”

How about a body massage and a spa day?I shook my head while trying to chuckle away more fantasies. It felt like I had stepped right into a sauna with how steamed I was getting just being in the same room as Andres. And that didn’t even make sense. I barely noticed the guy before. Why was I worrying about him now?

Andres approached me, the heat doubling the closer he got. “I see you’ve changed your mind.”

I gulped.

I hadn’t even said a word. How did he know that I changed my mind?

“Don’t worry. You’ll have everything you need,” he assured, “and more.”

Something about the way he said that sounded like both a promise and a threat.

And that only made me feel hotter.

“When can I—?”

Andres plucked a stray leaf from my blouse and held it between us. “You can start now, Sadie. That’ll be all. Thank you.”

Oh goddess, why did I get the feeling that I was in trouble?
