She was clearly obsessed, yet she made no move in that direction.

Why?

Her parents had given her everything. She could have stayed in their home and gone after her dreams. I knew plenty of people that had done that. I’d certainly been one of those people. My mother insisted I study while at home with her until I was able to get on my feet.

Of course, that was because my mother didn’t lie through her teeth. She didn’t wear synthetic grins. She didn’t hide things in plain sight.

I turned around. “What are your parents hiding? Money troubles?”

Sadie stopped typing. “What are you going on about now?”

“I’m just wondering why you wouldn’t stay with your parents if they had enough to support you.”

“I didn’t want to stay with them.”

I frowned. “Why, Sadie? You could have pursued any of your dreams if you just stayed in their house. They clearly have the room.”

“Do you want me to move out?”

“I didn’t say that. I’m just asking about—”

She pushed away from the desk. “It’s none of your business, Andres.”

“But itismy business. I’m the one who hired you. I’m the one who writes your paychecks. Don’t I get to know what I’m paying for?”

“I thought it was room and board.” She grabbed her cardigan from the back of the chair. She’d been wearing it a lot lately along with a scarf around her neck. “I’m going for a walk.”

I stood up. “Not around the building.”

“I’m not stupid, Andres. I’m not going to the second floor to get stuck in one of those weird rooms.”

“I didn’t say that. I just—”

She threw her hands up. “I’m not running off to talk to Izdor either.Goddess, if you would just give me some breathing room.”

“Do you want to move out?” Too much rage on those words. I had to reel it back in. “Because it sounds like you’re trying to push me into shoving you out. You know you do that, right?”

Well, so much for reeling it in.

“I think you should think before you speak, Andres,” she shot back. “You’re starting to sound a little too much like my mother.”

“I wouldn’t know. You don’t tell me anything about your family.”

She grabbed her purse. “Didn’t think I needed to give you all those details before we got into ourfakeengagement.” She stared at her left hand for a second. “It doesn’t matter. It’s not important.”

“But it is important.”

“No, it’s not. And I don’t see why it needs to be.”

My hand went to my forehead. “You’re insufferable. No wonder you can’t live with anybody.”

“What are you trying to say?”

“How do I know your parents didn’tkickyou out for being like this all the time?”

Her eyes hardened. “That’s a big leap to take without any evidence.”

“You haven’t proven me wrong. You just keep arguing with me.”
