We stood in the shower together, hot water running down both of our bodies, the rivers moving between her tits and down her flat stomach. Her wet hair clung to her skin like glue, and drops fell from the edge of her nose.

She was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. I don’t know how I hadn’t realized it the first time I’d laid eyes on her. Instead of embracing her beauty, I’d focused on her disobedience.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Yes.”

“Did you always know the darkness could be reversed…or was that the first time you realized?”

I’d thought this conversation had died and been buried, but it still piqued her interest. There was no anger or accusation in her eyes, so I accepted it as simple curiosity. “I’ve always suspected it was possible, but we never knew how.”

“How did you know it was possible?”

“Rumors…stories. I’d never seen it with my own eyes, but I had to believe it existed.”

“And your father figured out how to facilitate it?”

“Yes.”

“And how do you facilitate it?”

I stared, feeling a wall rise in my heart.

“Not because I intend to ever pursue it,” she said quickly. “I’m just curious to know how it’s possible to return the soul to the body after they’ve been separated for a length of time. It must be magic.”

“My father didn’t explain the details to me. Said he captured a witch in his lands, and she offered the magic in exchange for her freedom. I’m not sure how it works either, and until I see it actually happen, I probably never will.”

“When Clara and I spoke, she was a little nervous about the whole thing. I told her it could be reversed.”

“You think she’ll go through with it?”

“Yes,” she said. “The sacrifice isn’t her hesitation. I think a part of her will always be afraid that Cobra will betray her like her last lover. And she just needs to know there’s a way out if that happens.”

“My brother says a lot of shit, but he’s loyal. He would much rather get screwed over than screw someone else over, especially when it comes to a woman he loves. We both know his love is genuine, even if it has been a short while.”

“I know.”

“After they’re married and they’ve had more time together, all those insecurities will fade.” I’d watched Larisa’s insecurities fade further and further as our relationship continued, despite my transgressions. After our last fight, her trust in me seemed to deepen. Now we were stronger than we ever were. Once the werewolves were defeated and the kingdoms were liberated, an everlasting peace would ensue, and I looked forward to that time with her. Just the two of us in the shade of a tree, watching the ocean crash against the shore, Fang tangled up in the branches above us.

Her eyes locked on mine, and a subtle smile moved on to her lips. “I know they will.”

CLARA

I stood in my wedding dress, a bouquet of flowers in my hand, the first flowers I’d seen in Grayson. Their city was stone and wood, serpents carved into the foundation and the pillars. Grass, trees, and mountains surrounded the stronghold, but flowers were nowhere to be seen. I knew Cobra must have sent men out to harvest these from the wild, so I would have something that reminded me of Evanguard in my hands.

Kingsnake moved in front of me. “Cobra has a message for you.”

“He does? I’m going to see him in a moment.”

“He said if he had a heart, it would race as quickly as yours.”

I was on the other side of the palace, but he could still hear it, probably because I was the only living being in proximity.

“Not in fear, but excitement,” Kingsnake said. “Are you ready?”

I nodded. “A lot has changed in the last few months. When I met Cobra, I was betrothed to a man I didn’t love because the man I did love had betrayed me. And now I stand here…about to marry a vampire…and become one myself.”
