“Got it.” Cobra nodded to him. “Good luck, brother.”

Kingsnake said it back. “Good luck, brother.”

His father turned his horse away and said nothing.

Kingsnake turned his attention to me. “I need you to move to the rear now, sweetheart.”

It was time to say goodbye.

I stayed on my horse and stared at him, unsure what to say.

He was empty, no emotion whatsoever, as if this was a regular day.

I suspected he’d cleared his mind for me, tried to assure me this was nothing to worry about.

But I would worry anyway. “Please be careful.”

“You know I will.”

I couldn’t hug him on the horse. Couldn’t kiss him. Only stare. “I love you.”

A flush of emotion swept through him, like every other time I said it. “I love you too, sweetheart.”

I tugged on the reins of my horse and moved to the back, away from the rows of soldiers, away from my husband, the king who would lead our people to victory…or defeat.

I stayed in the rear with the small army Kingsnake had deployed to protect me. Fang was wrapped around my shoulders, his eyes focused ahead as he waited for the explosives to tear holes through the walls.

“Are you scared?”

No.

“You think he’ll be okay?”

Kingsssnake has survived many battles.

“But were any of the battles like this?”

Thisss isss the firssst time werewolvesss have been our foes.

“And that doesn’t scare you?”

I have faith. As ssshould you.

Suddenly, the world shook as the first explosive catapulted blocks of stone into the sky. It happened so quickly, but everything moved so slowly. The stones seemed to hover in the air before they slowly came back down to the ground. Then the second wall and third wall detonated simultaneously, the sound deafening on the ears. It spooked my horse, and he shifted and turned, stomping his hooves on the earth in distress.

“It’s okay, honey.” I pulled the reins tight to get him to still.

I saw the armies charging in the darkness, three different lines of soldiers of Ethereal and vampires heading into the city to kill everyone who got in their way. I remained at a safe distance, protected by my own calvary, but the sight was so stressful that I was relieved Kingsnake had asked me to stay behind. “It’s happening…”

“Hooowwwwlllll!”

“Hooowll!”

“Hooowwwllll.”

Like dogs howling at the full moon, the werewolves’ cries pierced the sky.
