The werewolf stepped forward. “If you’re so brave, why don’t you come down here and have this conversation face-to-face?”

“Don’t do it,” Elias whispered.

“Don’t worry, I won’t bite,” the werewolf said.

“Then I won’t either.”

His smile dropped.

I turned on my heel and moved down the stairs, King Elias behind me.

“Larisa, I understand you’re a nightwalker now, but it’s still three-on-one.”

“He won’t fuck with me when he knows who I am.” I walked to the gate. “Open the doors.”

“No.” Once he gave his order, the men obeyed. “You’re going to get yourself killed—”

“The only way to deal with an enemy is to stand your ground. You’ve let them take from your people long enough. They’re bullies, and we know there’s only one way to deal with bullies. It breaks my heart to see my home become a ghost town, and I’m not going to sit here and watch them take however little is left.” I looked at the guard. “So open the damn gate.”

The guard looked at Elias.

Elias gave a nod.

The doors opened, revealing the three werewolves.

“Wow,” the lead werewolf said. “Pretty’s got spunk.”

I walked forward.

Elias joined me.

“What are you doing?” I halted.

“I’m not letting you do this alone—”

“I don’t need your help. You’re so weak you can barely stand.” I faced forward and continued. “I’ll handle this myself.” I moved ahead onto the open grass, and he didn’t follow me.

I made the long walk to the three werewolves, and the one in the lead looked utterly delighted by my company.

He looked me up and down appreciatively. “Maybe you should be king of this place.”

“I can’t,” I said. “Because I’m already Queen of Vampires and Lady of Darkness. I’m sure you know my husband, Kingsnake, King of Grayson, the most ferocious vampire there ever was.” A part of me felt guilty for invoking his name when I didn’t know what we were anymore. I didn’t want to be his queen anymore, let alone his wife, not when he refused to be honest with me, not when he’d hidden something so important to me.

The werewolf didn’t cower in fear as I’d hoped. “Kingsnake has done pretty well for himself.” He continued to objectify my body with that stare, piercing my armor like he could see my tits in the flesh. “But he’s not here. Because if he were, he wouldn’t let you anywhere near me. So, I have a proposition for you, Pretty. Come back with me—and I’ll spare this godforsaken village you care so much about.”

“No.”

“Come on. I’ll make you forget about that leech—”

“I said no. Now leave these lands and never return…or receive our wrath.”

“Wrath?” he asked with a laugh. “You and that spineless pussy who let you come out here alone?”

“I don’t need his help.”

He gave a chuckle as he looked me over. “I may be a werewolf, but I’m also a gentleman when it comes to a pretty girl. I’ve humored you up until this point, but I’ve grown tired of the game. Give me what I want, or you’ll receivemywrath.”

I stepped forward, getting right in his face. “I. Said. No.”
