Cobra stood behind his brother, watching the conversation with a guarded gaze.

I stared at my husband.

He stared at me.

He came forward. “How could you do this to me? Do you have any idea what the fuck you just put me through—”

“Wow, that’s rich.”

He pushed the boundary and became angrier. “Excuse me?”

“I left Grayson, which is perfectly within my rights to do because I’m not a prisoner. But that’s comparable to what you did?”

“What the fuck did I do—”

“You lied to me.”

“And what did I lie about?” When I yelled, he yelled. We screamed at each other on the battlefield, surrounded by dead werewolves and Cobra and Fang.

“That I can be human again.”

Within the snap of a finger, the rage inside him died. A pail of water had doused his flames, and now there was just weak smoke.

“You were never going to tell me, were you?”

His emotions were impossible to interpret. There was too much to unravel. But I could definitely see panic—panic that he’d been caught.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I shoved him hard in the chest, and he let his body stumble back, defenseless. “I’m the one who has to make the ultimate sacrifice to be together, but you wouldn’t do the same for me. That’s what it comes down to. You could give me children if you wanted to—but you don’t.”

He breathed, saying nothing.

I wanted him to keep yelling because this horrible truth was too much. I wanted him to say it wasn’t true and scream at me for even thinking he was capable of such a betrayal…but he didn’t.

“I can’t believe you let me marry you.”

His eyes stayed locked on mine, but he didn’t say a word. His emotions were such a tornado that nothing could be deciphered.

“You have nothing to say?”

“I have a lot to say.” Now his voice was quiet, defeated. “It’s a lot more complicated than you think—”

“I wouldn’t know because you never told me.”

“Then let me explain this to you now—”

“This is not how this conversation is supposed to go. You’re supposed to scream at me for believing something so horrible about your character. You’re supposed to yell at me for leaving Grayson and putting myself in danger. You’re supposed to be pissed off at me because I betrayed you by believing this nonsense. But it’s true…it’s fucking true.” The hot tears started in the backs of my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. “Why do the men I love always betray me?”

He closed his eyes, and that was when I felt it.

Heartbreak.

“We’re done here.” I walked off back toward the gate where King Elias remained. With a solemn expression, he stared at me as I came close. I expected the sound of Kingsnake’s boots behind me, expected his arm to grab me by the elbow and yank me back, but it never happened.

He let me go.
