HARLOW

I sat at the bar with Brianna, the two of us enjoying a beer along with a bowl of nuts. Patrons at the tables enjoyed the stew from the kitchens, turning their evening festivities into dinner. Others sat alone at the bar and drank after a hard day of work. Fires burned in the hearth, the only light in the dark place.

“So, it’s really over?” Brianna asked. She was a seamstress who had worked on my clothes for the last few years. We’d struck up a friendship and had become good friends over the years.

“Yes.”

“Ethan is so hot, though.”

“I know,” I said with a sigh. “But he fucked it up when he made it complicated.”

“I can’t believe he asked your father to marry you.”

“Idiot.”

“Another king would have beheaded him just for the insult. Ethan’s lucky your father is composed and doesn’t have a temper.”

“Oh…he has a temper.” He just didn’t show it in front of Atticus and me.

“Have you spoken to Ethan since?”

“My father threatened to kill him if he bothered me. Looks like Ethan took that threat seriously. It was supposed to just be for fun, but he screwed it all up.”

“He’s an artist. He’s emotional and gets attached to things.”

I grabbed my beer and took a drink.

“What a shame… He was so hot.”

“Are you asking my permission, Brianna?”

“No,” she said with a laugh, but she immediately reached for the nuts and avoided my gaze. “I wouldn’t do that to you.”

“Girl, go for it.”

“What?” she asked incredulously.

“I’m the one who ended things, so I have no claim to the guy.”

After she ate a few nuts, she looked at me again. “You’re serious.”

“Yes. He’s great in bed—so I recommend him.”

She suddenly became distracted because her eyes moved across the room, like she was watching someone walk behind me. Then her gaze turned steady over my shoulder. “I bethe’sgood in bed…”

“Who?”

“A hot motherfucker just sat at the bar.”

“A hot motherfucker?” I asked. “Never heard that one before.”

“He’s super-hot, alright?” Brianna said. “I don’t know how else to say it.”

I started to turn.

She grabbed my wrist. “Don’t make it obvious. He’s looking this way.”
