“And you would kill me if the situations were reversed.”

“I’m not sure where I earned this reputation as a ruthless killer, considering everything I did for you.” His eyes burned into mine. “I never tried to feed from you. You have no idea how hungry I was, but the thought didn’t cross my mind. I could have bled you out and found another way home—but I didn’t. I get you’re still angry at me, but don’t destroy my reputation when I don’t deserve it. There’s no reason to keep me locked down here, not if I’m officially your ally.”

“My father doesn’t want you near me.”

“If I didn’t feed then, why would I feed now?” His eyes bored into mine with ferocity. “I keep my word. I won’t harm your citizens, I’ll feed on animal blood, and I’ll help you face whatever you’re up against. I’m not staying down here until my people arrive.”

“Well, you don’t have much of a choice.”

His eyes stilled as he took in my face. “You’re just like your father.”

“I take that as a compliment.”

“He arrogantly came in here without his armor, and I could have hurt him pretty badly if I’d wanted to, even in my weakened state. But I didn’t. I took a beating like a dog to prove, for the millionth time, that I’m not a threat to you.”

My eyes shifted away, uncomfortable that my father had exposed himself like that.

“Harlow.”

My eyes remained fixed for a moment before I looked at him again.

“Tell your father to release me. I may not have earned his trust—but I’ve earned yours.”

I looked away again.

“You know I have.”

“My father…is not someone who can be reasoned with.”

“Unless you’re the one doing the reasoning.”

I pulled out the parchment and the quill and ink. “Write your letter and provide directions to the sailors.”

His eyes remained on me. “Everything that happened between us was real. If you think I fucked you like that and it was all pretend…you’re crazy.”

“Write the letter.”

“It was so real that I turned on my allies and saved you.”

“Shut up and write the damn letter—”

“Harlow.”

I continued to hold the parchment through the bars, standing so close to him that it was like the bars weren’t there. “I really liked you…” I dropped my chin, embarrassed that I’d said that out loud.

He didn’t say anything, just stared at me.

Now I regretted speaking those words, putting the truth out there for him to hear.

“I wouldn’t have saved you if the feeling weren’t mutual.”

I kept my eyes down, too ashamed to meet his look.

“You’re the only person who can convince your father to let me go—and you know it’s the right thing to do.”

I kept my eyes on the parchment paper in my hands.

“Please…”
