Sadie leaned over and stole one of the bags off of my lap before unceremoniously ripping out what was inside and holding it up. She wasn’t a believer in fanfare.

The shirt was pale green with a tiny bit of ruffle detail at the neckline and hips. It was attention-grabbing in a very subtle way, and the color perfectly matched her eyes, except for the flecks of gold that made them hazel. Her expression held cautious interest. She didn’t want to like it, but I suspected I was right on the money. Sadie liked pretty things. She just didn’t think they belonged on her. I wanted to change that.

“What do you think?”

She shrugged. “It’s okay. My turn.”

“Not yet.” I held out the other bag I brought and shook it back and forth when she didn’t take it.

“I have to look at the other one? This one’s fine. I don’t need both.”

“Consider it a backup.”

“But I don’t have a backup for you.”

“That’s okay. Keep both. Or pick the one you like better.”

She reluctantly took the bag and peeked inside. “It’s pink.”

“Salmon.”

“The fact that you know the difference scares me a little bit, Denver.”

I would not tell her I’d specifically asked the sales clerk if there was a non-pink pink color. Apparently, there were several, and they were all food related. Watermelon, peach, salmon, strawberry. Women were way too interested in expanding their color vocabulary.

“Go try them both on.”

“This pink one says, ‘Do Not Disturb’ on it.” She bit back a grin.

“It’s not pink, it’s salmon. And admit it. You like it.”

“We’ll see.”

It wasn’t midriff revealing, but it did tie in one corner. She fingered the little knob of material, looking hesitant. She definitely didn’t want to like this one.

“Are you going to try them on?”

“Right now?”

“I thought that was the plan.”

“Modeling clothes for you was definitely not part of this negotiation.”

“Fine. I’ll take them back.” I reached out for the two shirts on her lap, but she blocked me from taking them, like I knew she would.

“Stay here.” She got up with them and went down the hall. Minutes passed. Nitro cooed from his cage. Someone outside the apartment walked down the corridor with their keys jangling. The air conditioning kicked on, adding a whooshing noise as background to my boredom. How long did it take to change a shirt?

Just because I could, I peeked in the bag she’d brought for me, pulling out the body wash. I lifted the lid and took a sniff.

“Aha!” Sadie shouted from right behind me.

I jumped and dropped the bottle at my feet, causing the lid to pop open. Sadie sank down and quickly shut it.

“You spilled.”

“And you’re wearing the same thing you left in.”

I reached down and flipped the tag of her gray shirt back in. She’d obviously changed back into it after trying the other shirts on. The ones I wasn’t allowed to see. “Where did I spill?” I looked around at the carpet, looking for globs of body wash.
