“Exactly. And now if you’ll excuse us, I have someone I need to talk to.” Sadie turned away and pulled me along behind her like a tugboat, heading straight for Zane. I glanced back at Kellen. He still looked bewildered. That made two of us.

Sadie was right, though. We needed to focus on Zane and not on mending fences that I wasn’t sure needed to be mended.

“Zane, right?” she asked, putting on a big smile and holding out her hand for him to shake.

Zane smiled and shook her hand. “That’s me.”

“I’m Sadie, and this is Denver.”

The woman talking with him looked annoyed by the interruption, even when Zane put his arm around her and introduced her to us. Sadie ignored her glare and continued talking, asking Zane how long he’d been there and what kind of music he liked to listen to.

It didn’t take long for the woman to give up and bail.

Zane stared after her. “I thought you two were supposed to help me.”

“No jealous types for you, Zane,” Sadie warned. “Try Avery, three-o’clock. She’s not bold enough to come over here, but she’s looked your way several times. Didn’t talk much in the thread, but when she did, she actually had something to say. Do you know what I mean by that?”

Zane nodded, frowning slightly. “I think so. Denver, do you agree with Sadie?”

“I always agree with Sadie.”

“I’ll bet you do.” Zane’s eyes went to our joined hands.

Sadie blanched. “No, we’re just coworkers. And actually, Denver disagrees with me all the time.”

“No, I don’t.”

“You’re disagreeing with me right now.”

It was amazing how fast we could start an argument. “Anyway, I don’t disagree with her on matchmaking. She knows her stuff.”

Zane’s eyes twinkled. “Okay then. Wish me luck. Anyone else?”

Sadie glanced around. “Yeah. I’m going to make friends with the trio over there. But don’t look at them. Focus on Avery for now. I’ll let you know.”

After Zane walked towards Avery like a man on a mission, she took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Ready for what’s next? I’m actually really bad at making friends so feel free to take the lead on this.”

“I would, except I don’t know who you’re wanting to talk to. Lead the way, partner.”

She stared down at our joined hands, looking pensive. “I should stop hanging off of you like a Velcro monkey.”

“I happen to like Velcro monkeys.” And I didn’t want to let go. She needed me, even if she didn’t want to admit it.

“You’re a dork.”

“This is true.”

She glanced around and sighed when she found the group she was looking for. “They’re headed out to the dance floor.”

“You didn’t think you’d get out of dancing tonight, did you?”

“I had my hopes.”

I followed her gaze and spotted the three women she was talking about. They looked out of place, but excited. It wouldn’t be hard to strike up a conversation, as long as they didn’t mind yelling. It was hard to hear yourself think in a place like this, let alone hear anyone else.

“Let’s do this.” I gave Sadie’s hand a tug, but she was frozen to the spot. Fretting, overthinking, recalculating. One of those. Or maybe all three. “What is it?”

“I’m worried about you being a distraction. They will try to steal you from me if you give any indication that you’re anything but one-hundred-percent into me.”
