Denver: We’re on for the science museum tomorrow night. Colton caved. I told him guiding a woman through a maze was a no-fail in.

Denver: Because I’m the man.

Denver: But I need confirmation from my best pal who’s ignoring me.

I kept my phone angled away from Isaac, but I couldn’t hide my face. It was the Beaker gif. I couldn’t watch an overwhelmed Beaker running around with his stumpy arms in the air and not smile at least a little bit.

“Who is he?”

“A coworker.”

“Who texts you four times and makes you smile like that?”

“Whatever. I see where this is going. You’re digging for gossip. Which department do you work in?”

“I don’t work in a department. I own the Beautiful Blooms floral shop down the street. Well, co-own it. With my sister.”

It was so Hallmark of him. He even had the boyish good looks and sad backstory to go with it. I was tempted to pinch him and see if he was real.

He pulled out a business card from his shirt pocket and handed it to me as proof. “And now you have my number.”

Isaac Romano, Florist

Beautiful Blooms

“For when I order flowers?”

He smiled. “Exactly. You can send some to this guy. Are you going to text him back? You could send him a picture of the two of us. Tell him he’s missing out.”

“No way.”

“Why not?”

A thousand reasons. Because that was so not me. Because I wasn’t in the habit of taking random suggestions from strangers. But also, because I didn’t know why Isaac was daring me. Maybe he was bored or maybe he liked creating chaos. Isaac might look like Mr. Hallmark, but I was detecting a mischievous streak in him. Or maybe a calculating one, because Carmen had paid no attention to him, but was now watching us carefully while pretending not to. And he had noticed. Was I the means to an end?

It made perfect sense. It explained why he was flirting with me, but with a friendship undertone. A guy who was interested didn’t encourage you to go after someone else.

Isaac shook his head. “I swear I can see the pros and cons list floating above your head.”

“You have no idea.”

Denver texted again, practically begging me to take Isaac’s dare.

Denver: Where are you and what are you wearing?

Sadie: You’ve really taken the creepy friend thing to heart. Hold on, I’ll show you.

I went to my camera app and held out my phone, motioning for Isaac to get in the picture with me. “Nothing weird?”

“Nothing weird,” he promised.

He didn’t even put his arm around me, just squished his face next mine and smiled like the wholesome GQ model he was. I never took selfies, which was evidenced by my thumb being in the first three. Once I had a good one, I texted it to Denver.

Sadie: I’m hanging out with my new friend at Skillets.

He immediately responded.

Denver: BRT
