She was so quiet after that, for a moment I thought she’d hung up on me. “I don’t think I’m wired for casual. That’s why I’m so scared of us.”

Her words struck me like a lightning bolt. She had every right to be scared. And I had a lot of work to do proving I was done with casual, walk-away relationships. To her and to myself. That probably meant changing my expectations about finishing what we started the second I saw her tomorrow. The flirtatious me had to take a backseat to the responsible me, the one who needed her to like me long-term.

“Slow is not the same thing as casual. How about we do regular things tomorrow, as friends. No expectations. Do you want to go grocery shopping with me?”

“Um, sure. I have some errands I can drag you along to.”

“Great. I’m all in on errands. But, if we give each other tomorrow to think about things, I want Sunday, too.”

“What if I’m busy?”

“Are you busy or are you just being contrary?”

“I’m being contrary. The only thing I have Sunday is a dinner at my dad’s house at five.”

“No worries. That’s when I help out at the homeless shelter serving dinner. I’m there every other week.”

“That’s awesome. Why haven’t you ever invited me along to that?”

“Sadie, would you like to go with me next time?”

“I’d love to.”

Holy cow. She’d just made future plans with me. It was almost as good as hearing she thought my bluntness was hot.

Chapter 33 – Sadie

Jenny shook me awake. It was bright out. Really bright.

“What time is it?” I asked, blinking up at her.

“Ten-thirty. I’m heading out to Noah’s in a minute. But that’s not why I woke you up. Um, Denver’s here.”

“Here where?”

“Here on our couch. I told him you weren’t awake yet, and he said he’d wait.”

He was waiting. For me. The news made me feel all squishy inside, but also confused. Had we planned when we were meeting up? I picked up my phone and squinted at it, trying to remember where we’d left things last night. Right. With plans to get breakfast together before errands. Well, it was going to be a late breakfast.

“Jen, I’m sorry you slept on the couch last night. That was really nice of you.”

She smiled. “Just think, in thirty-one days you’ll have this apartment all to yourself.”

“Not that you’re counting down the days or anything.”

“I’m counting down the hours. Part of me wants to toss all the wedding favors and plans and catering out the window and run off to Vegas with him. Except not Vegas. Somewhere classier.”

“I wouldn’t blame you.” I threw off my covers, debating what to do first. I was absolutely gross. I’d need a shower. Which meant blow drying my hair after. “Can I borrow your skinny serum hair stuff?”

“Of course. I wish they made chunky serum stuff. Then the bottle wouldn’t fall over and spill out. Do you know how many times I’ve wiped it off the counter and put it directly on my hair?”

I was still listening, but I was also running around grabbing things, which Jenny found amusing. “I take it you two worked things out last night?”

“What makes you say that?”

“Well, you didn’t tell me to send him away, for one. But also, when I said his name, your eyes got all big and dreamy, and now you’re running around like your hair is on fire.”

I frowned at her. “Why does everyone enjoy seeing me like this?”
