Harper frowned. Why would Gina want to get into the boat? She looked down where Gina was standing in the water. Her feet had to be frozen. The North Atlantic at the end of October was icy.

“Jason been stalking you?” George asked.

Harper turned back to him. “What? Yes. He has.”

“That boy has a problem. Known about it for a while.”

“But you didn’t do anything. That makes you an asshole.” Harper snarled. “Why turn him in when he turned a blind eye toward what you were doing.”

“Enough,” Lockerby yelled. “It’s time to go. Get in the fucking boat.”

Gina turned and walked over toward the side of the tunnel where the elevated flat rocks were, dragging Harper into the water with her. She clamored up onto the rocks and half-dragged, half-helped Harper up as well. Lockerby was about to jump to the rocks when Flynn came up behind him and put a gun to his head. “Freeze, Asshole.”

Harper had never been so happy to see someone in her whole life. Her knees weakened and she sagged against the cave wall in relief. Gina turned and stared at her. “What are you happy about? He’s one of them.”

“One of them? What do you mean? He’s not part of Fisher’s group.”

“No, but he’s part of the Society. He’s one of their enforcers.”

Society? Enforcers? What was she talking about?

“Put it down, Lockerby. You too, Crawley.”

“Shoot him,” Lockerby demanded. “Shoot him, Crawley.”

Flynn pushed the gun harder into the side of Lockerby’s skull. “He’s not going to shoot me. This is his chance to get rid of you. I’m not the cops. Gina’s right. I’m with the Society and you’ve broken the rules. You’re not allowed to kill someone on the premises. The penalty is death.” After listening to what Crawley said Lockerby had done to Astrid, Flynn had no qualms about taking the man out.

“Kill him, Crawley. It’s not just me. Fisher and Davis have the information too. You won’t be free if I die.”

George raised his gun. “Man’s got a point.”

“So what? You’re going to kill all of us? You going to try and bury us too? Isn’t that how you got your hernia in the first place?” Crawley was off his rocker if he thought he could manage all that.

Flynn glanced at Harper. Her mouth was hanging open and her eyes were wide. Now she knew the truth. It killed him that she had learned of his role, but it was better this way. It didn’t matter that his heart physically cracked in his chest. This was who he was, and the sooner she understood that the better for the both of them.

Harper stared at him and then started to cough. Bending over, she slipped and fell into the cold water, dragging Gina with her. They both went under and came back up thrashing, trying to get their footing. Flynn wanted to jump in to get her but he didn’t dare take his focus off Lockerby. The water was only waist deep. She just needed to get to her feet. His heart was pounding in his chest watching her and then there was movement out of the corner of his eye. Crawley was raising his gun.

The sound of the gunshot was deafening in the enclosed space. Harper and Gina froze. She looked at Flynn. He was still standing there. He hadn’t fired. Did George Crawley shoot him? Was Flynn okay? She fell to her knees in the water and dragged herself back. She pulled Gina along with her trying to get to him. He had to be okay. If Flynn was hurt, or worse…

There was a sound and she spun to the right. George was staring down at the growing stain on his shirt. He’d dropped his gun and slid down the wall. Flynn nodded toward the doorway. “Thanks.”

“No problem. Sorry I was a bit late. Hard as hell to find this place,” Billy Lazlo said as he walked through the water coming deeper into the cave.

Harper stared. Gina was shivering beside her. They needed to get out of the water.

Flynn turned to Lockerby. “Now we have to deal with you.” He still had the gun to the man’s head.

“You’ve got nothing on me. I didn’t kill Astrid. You can’t prove I did. Gina don’t say a thing. They can’t prove anything.”

Flynn looked at him. “Do you honestly think we’re going to hand you over to the cops?”

Confusion lit Lockerby’s face. “But he’s a cop. He shot Crawley to protect you.”

Lazlo snorted. “I’m not a fucking cop. Well, I guess I am. But I’m also Society.” He pulled himself out of the water next to Crawley and then squatted down and checked for a pulse. He looked up at Flynn. “He’s dead.”
