We talked for hours after that, but he didn’t go anywhere near the subject of the videos. The last thing he said on the subject before I fell asleep was, “Trust me, pretty poet.”

Then my eyes fluttered shut.

My face turns grim in the mirror because I didn’t tell the girls. Mel and Annie probably wouldn’t judge, and Eva wouldn’t do that per se either, but she warned me about continuing this affair with Sade. Because that’s all we can have. A clandestine affair. And that only until he does what must be done, and then Gertrude gets full-blown wife rights over him.

I spin around, casting it all from my head as I face the girls.

“Ready to go?” I force a large, beaming grin. “Where’s Annie?”

“Right here, Justice.” She makes her appearance, sliding into the picture with her arms open and a large here-I-am grin on her face. “Ta-daaaaa.”

When I fail to produce a reaction, she repeats. “Ta-daaa.” Then again, less enthusiastically. Of course she’d decide to be a bunny. Eva turns to me, throwing her thumb over her shoulder.

“She’s doing everything in her power to make sure no one fucks her tonight. Or ever.”

“Keep it up, Annie Bunny, and you’re going to die a virgin,” Mel puts in.

Annie waves them off, unconcerned, though a little disappointed that her outfit didn’t have the desired effect.

“The only boyfriends I need are book boyfriends anyway. No man made of flesh and blood could live up to them–tall, dark, dangerous, and obsessed with their girl.”

Yeah, a certain someone comes to mind.

“Besides, losing your V-card to actual dick is outdated and probably overrated, too.” Her sweet face turns naughty. “But, if you insist, I can make you acquainted with my state-of-the-art friend with benefits. I call him Mr. Big, Thick and Pink.”

“Ew,” Mel screws her nose up at Bunny-Annie before she heads for the door.

“That didn’t sound as convincing as you think,” Annie throws after her while Eva follows, shaking her head.

Within a few minutes, we’re down in the driveway, the limo Mel ordered already waiting for us. I must say, the ride is quite an experience.

“You need to get used to the lifestyle, wench, because now you’re in the cool kids’ club.” Mel lifts her flute of champagne at me. “And nothing will kick you out of it again, no matter what those rich pricks decide to do–and yes, Gertrude Fairfell is officially included in the pricks’ club because we’re not discriminatory like that.” She leans in and grips my knee. “No matter what, we’ll find a way out of this.”

She’s more enthusiastic than usual from the booz but no less sincere. I don’t even dare have a taste, though. The last thing I need is to lose it at a party where porn footage of me might be made public. I wouldn’t put it past Gertrude to make the event grand in that way.

The colorful limo with its neon lights comes to a halt in front of the school, along with many others. Music and voices wash over us, along with beaming lights from the projectors scattered around the building.

“Ah, the Scream My Name Party,” Annie exclaims, spreading out her arms as she emerges from the limo. Embracing the humongous main building of the college, everything from vampires to witches and shifters projected onto it in hues that would make Hitchcock’s skin crawl. The image shifts, turning into a kaleidoscope of light before it blasts wide into a cemetery with creepy trees and tombstones, the sinister music adding the perfect topping to the atmosphere.

An atmosphere perfectly suited for the original gothic gloom of the building.

As with every Halloween party I’ve ever been to, there is an overload of vampires and witches, now flocking on the stairs towards the widely open grand entrance. None of the witches are quite like Mel, though. There’s something classy about her no matter what she’s wearing. She didn’t go out of her way to look slutty tonight either, mainly because she’s seen as one of the most eligible partners for the ultra-rich, while Eva cannot expose herself like that to her students.

There’s nothing to hold back Annie and me, though, which is why I’m still wondering about her bunny outfit.

As expected, dozens of eyeballs rove my way when I start stepping up the stairs, one gartered leg emerging from between the sides of my black gown after the other. I hold my chin up, every bit the Maleficent I’ve been dreaming up these past few days. The woman that can stand a lover’s betrayal and use it to become stronger, however bitter. By the time I reach the grand entrance, I have more attention than I’d usually be able to put up with. But since Sade, I’ve started to get used to the scrutiny.

The hall is crawling with students in creepy outfits, their voices lacing with the music.

“Let’s go get drinks,” Annie says, grabbing my hand. Before I know it, she’s dragging me through the crowd, Mel and Eva hot on our heels.

“Hey, we agreed we’d stay together,” Mel calls, but the bunny’s big white fluffy ears are on the booze hunt now.

“Keep up, princess,” she throws over her shoulder. I reach behind me, arm outstretched, and Mel immediately takes it. Eva smoothly grabs Mel’ s waist.

People’s eyebrows shoot up as we wind our way among them. For all the eccentric costumes around, we must be quite a weird lot. A dark faerie with black horns, a witch and an ice queen trailing after a white rabbit.

I rest with my elbows against the bar while the others order drinks, letting my eyes sweep over the attendees. The night is young, but there are already some people on the dance floor. Mostly girls showing off their slutty outfits–Halloween never fails to get a pass–probably trying to impress their crushes. A few poles have been installed around the floor, colorful and illuminated from the inside, inviting the girls to grab them and start showing off.
