Page 18 of Defining Us

“Wait for us, I need to go too. All that water and it sends me running to the toilet all day.” Jocelyn is on the other side of me now, and Talissa is tagging along too.

“You did great out there today, Nat, your leg lifts were amazing,” Jocelyn says. All the girls agree, even though I couldn’t care less. “I bet the boys are sitting in the changeroom feeling sorry for themselves because they lost. I might have to offer my services to cheer them up tonight at the party.” Jocelyn starts giggling while I’m cringing on the inside. “Maybe it might be my turn with Jordan tonight. I’ve certainly been trying hard enough. Think you could put in a good word for me, Nat?” That’s when I work out there was no need for her to go to the toilet, she was just trying to get me on her side.

I hate this shit. Seriously, they think I’m going to go up to Jordan and ask him if he wants to fuck Jocelyn tonight because I hear she’s a good lay. These girls are such a mess.

“Don’t count on me. I don’t get involved in his social life. That’s just creepy when he’s like a brother to me.” The words are more for me than her, trying to remind myself that Jordan is off limits.

We are almost to the door of the stadium when I see Coach and another man walking out with a folder in his arms. My brain goes into overdrive wondering if he’s one of the scouts. The smile on Coach’s face tells me something is going on.

The girls’ bathroom is just inside the stadium door, and Selena goes straight in with Jocelyn.

My eyes adjusting to the darker corridor, I blink a few times until I spot him.

Jordan.

Standing down the end of the corridor, against the wall near the locker room door.

Our eyes meet and it’s like I’m stuck for a split second.

Forcing myself to stop staring at him is hard when he’s looking so fine. My eyes roam over his bare chest. I’ve seen him like this many times before, but there is something different today. His features seem to be more defined, the eight-pack that is still glistening from sweat and the way his biceps are bulging while his hands are hanging onto the ends of the towel around his neck.

I don’t want to do anything that will make the girls notice him, but I can tell he looks stunned.

Hoping he can read my lips, with his eyes still on me, I mouth the word instead of talking. “Well?”

His chiseled jaw relaxes just a fraction with the slight smile appearing as he just gives me a subtle nod.

Holy shit, it’s going to happen. He’s really done it. I want to run down the hall and wrap him in the biggest congratulatory hug, but instead, I just return the biggest smile I can. At the same time, the girls are coming out of the bathroom, talking, and grab me by the arm, heading straight for the door to get out of here.

I want to laugh out loud as I mouth over my shoulder to him that I told him so last night. I can’t wait until later to talk to him.

Although I’m not sure the words will come out right when I’m that close to him.

Before last night, I didn’t know what he tasted like. What a kiss from Jordan could feel like. How the initial shock was overtaken by an overwhelming sense of wanting more.

I’m in so much trouble.

How do I act around the guy I’ve wanted for years, after that?

“Nat, are you even listening to us?”

“What? Sorry, what did you say?” We’re almost to the spot where the rest of the girls are waiting. We don’t even bother getting on the bus yet, knowing the guys will take a while to shower and be out.

“We were talking about the party tonight. What are you wearing? We don’t all want to turn up looking the same.” Jocelyn looks frustratingly at me. I groan on the inside. What I want to reply is that you all dress the same anyway. Short shorts, a crop top or tank top, and runners. It’s just the colors and hairstyles that will change.

“Um, I haven’t decided yet, probably some jeans and my green off-the-shoulder, three-quarter-sleeve shirt. I hear it’s going to be cold tonight.” I find my bag and retrieve my lip gloss. My lips feel awfully dry all of a sudden. I’m sure it hasn’t got anything to do with the fact I have been biting it for the last ten minutes.

“Who cares how cold it gets? That’s what you find a guy for. To warm you up.” Talissa giggles to herself.

“And my warm body is going to be Jordan, so hands off, ladies,” Jocelyn announces to the group.

Not sure I can handle much more of this, I stick my earphones in and lie back on the grass, my bag under my head as a pillow, myAlicia Keysplaylist blaring in my ears.Fallin’starts and brings a smile to my face. It’s like they are reading my mind, and that’s scary, but I wish I could play it on repeat, all the way home.

Clearing my head, I’m close to nodding off to sleep when I feel the coolness of a shadow over me and a tap on my foot. Opening my eyes, I can only see the outline of a boy with the glare of the sun behind him. I know it’s one of the players with his bag slung over his shoulder. Pulling my earphones out and sitting up quicker than I should, my head spins a little.

“Come on, Sis, you don’t want to get left behind.” Xavier is standing with his hand out to help me up. I must have been closer to sleep than I thought because most of the girls are already heading to the bus.

“Shit, sorry, I was just relaxing in the last of the warm sun.”
