“Okay, touchy subject I’m guessing. Why don’t you let me drive you home?”

“I won’t get in a car with anyone who has been drinking. You know that, Jordan.” I place my hands on my hips, about to lecture him on drunk driving.

“Good to know. And I would never offer if I had been drinking. I thought you would know me better than that, Nat. I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to you. Why do you think I ran after you when I saw you walking off into the dark on your own?” I’m not used to this softness from him. Normally it’s all jokes with him and Xavier, and I’m just the one who has to get the brunt of it.

“Sorry. I’m just tired and want to go home to bed.” I know I’m being a bitch.

“Big day then?” He puts his hand on my shoulder and the tingles run all down my arm.

“No, just no sleep last night,” I mumble, kicking myself that I’ve even said it.

“Same,” is all he replies, and then it hits me.

“God, I’m sorry. I haven’t even said congratulations. Since no one said anything all night, I’m guessing you’ve kept it to yourself, but was it a scholarship offer for college?”

“Yeah, a full ride with Syracuse University College, playing on their varsity team.” His voice is low, obviously not wanting anyone to hear him.

“Holy shit, Jordan, that’s amazing!” Jumping into his arms, my excitement makes me lose all my sense, and my excitement is rubbing off as Jordan starts swinging me around.

“I know. Fuck, I haven’t been able to tell anyone, and I’ve been holding it in all night. I feel so on top of the world.” His words in my ears make me realize how close we are and that he is hugging me tighter than I expected.

I can’t help my body tensing up, panic starting to creep in that I’m going to give away how much I like being in his arms.

Jordan must feel my tension and slowly lowers me back down.

Before I get a chance to find my balance as my feet hit the ground, his hand is on my cheek and lifting my face to look at him. I can’t say anything, even though I know I should, as his face drops to meet mine.

Those lips are soft, yet a little rough. Salty, with a hint of the sweetness of marshmallows. This is not like last night. His lips are taking mine with a sense of urgency and passion mixed in the touch. It’s sending off electrical sparks all through my body.

I should be stopping him, but for the love of God, I can’t. If I’m only going to get this one moment, let it be a good one, before he realizes what a mistake he’s making.

Yet his lips aren’t telling me he feels like that. They’re hot, demanding, and taking what they want. Giving me the pleasure of all the passion building behind our kiss.

“Jordan, have you seen Nat?” Xavier’s voice in the distance makes us jump apart in the darkness. My brother wouldn’t be able to see us properly.

My eyes plead with Jordan not to say anything.

“I’m here,” I yell to him. “Jordan was just walking me to the road for Mom to pick me up. Don’t panic, go back to playing tonsil hockey with Selena.” pull farther away from Jordan.

“Nat, please don’t. Wait,” Jordan whispers to me.

“Okay, cool, thanks, buddy,” Xav says. “See you in the morning, Sis.” His words a little slurred tells me he’s on his way to almost passing out for the night.

I take a few steps back, needing to make the gap bigger.

“Nat, we need to talk about this.” Jordan’s not crowding me, giving me the distance I need. I’m sure he can see my freakout all over my face.

“Nope, we’re good. I know it was another mistake. Just your excitement that got carried away.” I’m crying on the inside. “Oh look, here’s Mom. See you, Jordan, and congrats again.” Turning to the noise of a car coming down the road, I pray it’s Mom. Thank God I already messaged her and asked her to come.

Jogging the last few steps, I jump into the car with Mom, as she starts talking about what, I don’t know. I’m too busy watching Jordan left standing in the dark with his hands in his hair, looking confused and as frustrated as I feel.

If I thought I was going to catch up on my sleep tonight, that kiss sure put an end to that.

Driving home with Mom, giving her one-word answers, my finger is slowly sliding back and forth on my lip.

Savoring the one and only moment I will get with Jordan.

That can’t happen again.
