It’s my life.

“What will we do?”

It’s time to tell her the plan.

“We’re running, Cassie. Can you trust me to keep you safe on my own?” I ask, hoping I know the answer.

“Always and forever.” Although I see her fear, I also see the love behind it. We haven’t said it, but it’s there.

And that’s all I need to know.

“Then we start packing, we need to leave now.” I hope I haven’t freaked her out too much that she starts panicking.

She doesn’t even hesitate. “I’ll do our clothes, bathroom, and food. You do all your computers and guns.”

Before I can even reply, she is off toward the house.

Damn, I love this brave, strong woman. Until this moment I didn’t know how much. I didn’t know how long I would get to be with her, if she would understand this life.

I should never have doubted her, and now I know my answer of how long our love will last.

There is no limit to forever.

ChapterEleven

GHOST

Grabbing my go-bag from the back of the car on the way inside the house gives me what I need. It’s a bag I hoped I would never have to use, but it was something Badger taught me years ago about being prepared. Hearing Cassie moving around collecting everything we require without any complaining is a huge relief.

Firing up my personal laptop, my fingers race to get things I’m looking for quickly. Fake identities for now, printing the paperwork I require and creating a basic online profile for both of us until I have time to get something more substantial sorted tonight.

Bull and I set up a secure line of communication between us early on and sending the email to him now is the hardest thing to do. He is going to be furious at me for not reaching out for his help. He will understand in time, but he also knows I’m a lone wolf. It’s why I got the code name Ghost. I disappear into the night. He’ll know I’m around, he just can’t see me. I will find a way to get in touch when the time is right.

With my earpiece in, I call the only person I can who will understand and not judge me. Well, not initially anyway, it will just come later.

“Talk to me.” Badger knows. It’s those stupid voodoo powers he has.

“I’m taking a holiday.” It’s a code he told both Bull and me when he left the program. That if we ever needed to get out and go dark, to tell him we’re taking a holiday.

“Choosing a new destination, one above the boring predictable one?” I can hear his keyboard clicking in the background.

“Yeah, that same old holiday was getting predictable, and there was something about it that wasn’t right anymore. A change of scenery is what I need right now,” I reply, trying to let him know that we have been compromised.

“Understood. Go traveling, you never know what paradise you might find. Call me later and we can compare notes on the best holiday spots to visit.” Badger is already working on safe places for me to stop and get some sleep tonight. Since he left WITSEC, the work he’s been doing has given him contacts in places I might need now. Between that work and his ex-military buddies, there is a network outside the usual channels that I will be tapping into.

“Thanks, buddy. I really appreciate it, you know.” No time to get feelings, but a lump in my throat tells me no matter how tough I think I am, I’m worried.

“Shut up and get moving. Talk soon.” Badger disconnects the call, and I know he has my back.

I don’t have time to sit and think. I send all the identity documents to my burner phone and a spare cell I have that will now be Cassie’s, so it looks normal. I mean, who doesn’t have a phone now. Hell, even damn ten-year-olds have them now. What the fuck for, I’ll never know, but not my problem.

I make sure the WITSEC computers are set to play the loop and post the check-in reports I had set up just in case on a timer. All the preparation I did while trying to avoid Cassie in those early days is now paying off. Score one point for all that sexual frustration, for once.

It never takes me long to have my computers and guns packed. The last thing I do is trigger the secret cameras I have in the house that will feed to my records. It will show me when they arrive here. Who it is and what is said. It may or may not let me know who the mole is, but that isn’t important right this moment. I’ll work it out, and when I do, they’ll be dealt with in the appropriate way.

“Do I put our bags in the SUV or wait for you?” Cassie mouths to me as I walk toward her. She’s in the kitchen, grabbing the last of the food she thinks we need. Smart woman to even think of that. The fewer number of stops we make in the next twenty-four hours the better. Less chance of being picked up on cameras.

Dumping my bags at the back door with hers, I walk closer, and leaning into her ear, I whisper, “We aren’t taking the SUV, it’s tracked; we are going in the Toyota. I mean, what else would you expect in the less-than-five-star accommodation we offer,” I joke, trying to break the tension a little. Pulling back, I see the half-smile on her face as she pushes me away.
