“This is Doctor McIntyre, he needs to talk to you.” Turning the phone toward her, she is still looking at me with a sense of shock to see him on the video chat.

“Hi, Cassie, your husband tells me you had a seizure, and I need to know a bit more.”

Cassie is still looking at me with the question of whether she should trust him written all over her dazed face.

“You can trust him. He’s Ashton’s friend.” A bit of relief washes over her, but she is still so far from being herself.

“Okay.” She gives him a little nod of her head.

Tate continues to ask her some questions, and I’m furious to find out she almost fainted earlier. He has me using her phone’s flashlight while he’s on the video call on my phone and has me flashing it in her eyes so he can see her reactions. If she wasn’t so sick, we would be in the middle of an argument right now about keeping secrets from me. We promised to be honest with each other, and I could only keep things from her if it was for her benefit and safety.

So much has been happening in the last six months that I haven’t shared with her for those exact reasons. Jason has become more active again and is back doing the same things and some worse. He is now higher up the food chain in the government with an inside into the defense department, which is dangerous for all concerned. I have been monitoring him and compiling data. When I dump him in the FBI’s lap this time, there needs to be so much evidence that there is no way he can get out of it, along with the others involved. There seems to be another main person involved that I can’t flush out yet, but I will. Nothing is going to stop me from closing this whole operation down for good.

Even worse than all of this is that there have been searches happening on Cassie’s old name and the name she was placed in WITSEC with. So, someone knows inside information, just like I thought all along, and they are still after her. To me this is more serious than anything else!

I just wasn’t telling Cassie while she’s been dealing with a new baby in the house and the shock of having the first visitors in our home. Looking back, I’m so thankful that I didn’t share with her. Who knows what the extra stress would have done to her body.

Seeing her close her eyes again and Tate’s voice telling her to sleep as long as she feels she needs to, I turn the phone back off video and switch just to a voice call between us. I walk over to the side of the room so she can’t hear anything he is saying into the phone, even if she is sleeping.

“She’ll be okay for now.” I don’t like the use of the words “for now.”

“What’s happening?” I need answers, and I need them now.

“I don’t know yet, and you aren’t going to like what I’m about to say.”

“If you want to keep living, it better not be anything bad!” My voice comes out far sterner than it should. He is trying to help us, but my emotions are all over the place.

“Fuck, I can see why you and Ashton get along. Now, calm the fuck down. She needs you to keep her stable until we get to the bottom of this.” I want to rip into him for speaking to me like that, but I probably deserved it.

“Like I said, you won’t like it, but I’m concerned about her symptoms, and I need her to have an MRI so I can see what is going on inside her head.”

“Shit!” I slam my fist onto the wall beside me where I’ve been leaning. I’m on the other side of the room so I wasn’t disturbing Cassie resting. I hope the bang of my fist won’t wake her.

“It’s the only way, I’m sorry.” I can hear the sorrow in his voice. He knows the torment I’m feeling right now.

“I just can’t lose her. Leaving here is a massive risk, but not leaving here for this test is an even bigger risk, isn’t it.” I hope that he is going to deny what I said, but the slowyeshe replies tells me that there is no choice.

“How much time do we have to get it done?” It’s not like I can just put her in the car and take her to the nearest medical center.

“I can’t say, but I wouldn’t wait. Ghost?” Tate could hear I was already drifting off, trying to process it all and work out how the fuck I can do this without anyone finding her.

“Ghost!” Ashton’s voice booms in my ear.

“What the fuck! Alright, I’m listening. I forgot you were there.”

“And that statement tells me everything. You are not solid right now.” Ashton never pulls any punches. He is a straight shooter.

“Bullshit!” I can’t be vulnerable, I have to be her protector.

“I will send Bull and Asha back on the plane to look after the kids. Then you get back on the same plane with Cassie and we’ll bring her to Tate. It’s the safest way we have. No one needs to know she’s here until we know what you’re dealing with.”

“Like fuck I’m leaving my kids alone!” Pacing the room now, I can’t stand still.

“You don’t have a choice, dickhead. Cassie needs this, and the kids are safer in your fortress with Bull than here. Plus, you can concentrate on keeping Cassie safe. If they’re here, your loyalties are spread too thin and in too many directions. You always told me you trusted Bull with your life, and I’ve been living up to this legend since we met. So, prove it! Show me that you trust him with your life which is your family!”

“Asshole! Who the hell do you think you are! Of course, I fucking trust him.” As the words are coming out of my mouth, I understand what Ashton has done. He is making me face the reality of the situation, and now I know what I need to do.

Silence hangs between us for a few seconds.
