Elouise’s face fills my screen.

“Morning.” Her scratchy voice tells me I’ve woken her up.

“Shit, what time is it? I didn’t even look.” All the curtains are still closed, and I have no idea what it’s like outside. Is the sun even up?

“Stupid o’clock. I don’t know, all I know is my alarm hasn’t gone off yet.”

I glance at the clock in the top of the screen. “I’m so sorry, Lou, it’s only seven here, which means it’s six am there.”

“Ughhhh, why are you doing this to me? If this is to tell me what an awesome time you are having, surely it could have waited until later,” she grumbles, pushing her hair off her face and trying to sit up more in her bed, obviously waking more each minute.

“No, I’m coming home today.”

“Wait, what?” And now she is fully awake and pulling her phone closer to her face. “What the hell did you do?”

“Why do you assume it was me! This fucking bastard is playing table tennis with me. I can’t keep up. One minute he is being the normal asshole I know. Until I’m pretending to be his girlfriend and he is kissing me like a man on a mission. We spent a magical day in Rome that finished with him fucking me senseless.”

She slaps her forehead and groans at me. “Really! The first night and you already jumped his bones. I want to tell you how stupid that was, but… was it good? Is he the Aussie sex god we drooled about?”

“I can’t even tell you… like the kind of sex I think has ruined me forever. Holy shitballs, it was so fucking epic.” The warm feeling spreads through my body at just the thought of last night.

“So why are you coming home? Ride that stallion all week long, baby! And why were you pretending to be his girlfriend?” We are both giggling a little, and then reality smacks me in the back of the head, reminding me what is happening.

“The girlfriend thing doesn’t matter now. And don’t worry, I planned on taming the stallion, but he just marched into my bedroom, telling me to get up and pack because we are going back to London. No explanation and certainly no charm. What the hell happened? Like, does he have split personalities or is it just a one-and-done thing?” Now it’s me smacking my hand onto the bed I’m sitting on.

“That’s it, isn’t it? Now I understand his change in plans. He got what he wanted. Made me fall for his sex appeal, fucked me the way he wanted to, and now I have no use. He’s scratched his itch.” I’m up and walking around the room now, my anger overtaking any panic I felt earlier.

“Tori, whoa, slow down. You don’t know that. Maybe something has happened, and he needs to deal with that.” She always sees the good in people, that’s why I love Elouise.

“Nope, he would have said. The way he spoke to me was like I was just another random he was getting ready to kick out of his bed.”

“Tori…”

“No, I’m not taking that shit! He wants to treat me like a hooker, where he is paying me to be here and fuck him… well, he better be ready to deal with the backlash. I’m nobody’s floozy. I have more self-respect than that. Asshole! No man gets to push me around.”

I pull an outfit of the bag to wear today, like a woman on a mission.

“Tori, stop and listen to me, bitch! You still work for him. DO NOT BURN YOUR BRIDGES!” Even her screaming at me does not stop me from my train of thoughts.

“Yes, right. I’ll behave. Have to shower. See you tonight.”

“Don’t you hang up on—” Her face and voice are gone as I march into the bathroom, ending the call.

“You want to play games, Nicholas Darby, then I’m all in, baby.”

Taking a look at myself in the mirror, I see the small red scratches that are still evident on my neck from his rough stubble.

“Well, at least the universe made me see the real you,” I snarl, dropping the robe to the floor. “Just why did I have to fall for the Nicholas I met last night? Ughhh. No, he doesn’t exist.” My heart locks itself back up again. “Time to give him what he wants from me. Absolutely nothing.”

Except rage. Oh yeah, he is going to get that in spades.

What a prick!

ChapterTwelve

NICHOLAS

“Idon’t care what it costs, just get it fixed, today!” I yelled across the room before stomping back through the hotel to the elevator.
