Well, ladies, back off! He’s mine, and I’m doing everything in my power to keep him.

I didn’t think I would be that woman, but tonight, I so am.

Turning, I rise up on my toes and kiss him on the lips gently, hooking my arm around his waist.

“Feeling possessive?” There’s heat in his smile as he looks at me now.

“Very!” I bite down on my bottom lip and let it pop back out as the heat between us starts simmering.

“Noted.” He moves his hand from my lower back to around my waist and pulls me that little bit tighter against him. “You’ll be lucky to make it home still in that dress if you keep this up.”

I can feel him vibrating in the best possible way.

“Ooh, also noted. I’ll make sure I keep reminding you what is waiting underneath this sack I’m wearing.” We take a few steps closer to the doors.

“I wish it was a sack, so my cock wouldn’t be in so much pain.” Our voices are so low that no one else can hear us, making me feel like I’m in my own intimate Nicholas bubble. Somewhere I would love to be able to hide all night.

But of course, glitter ball girl comes crashing into it.

“Nic, so good to see you again.” Her voice couldn’t have any more flirting in it if she tried. Her breasts are almost falling out of her dress as she pushes them toward him and tries to lean forward to kiss him on the cheek like they are great long-lost friends.

Suddenly my body is pulled backwards, and I feel Lou’s hand on my back to save me from falling off balance. I try not to laugh at the burn that Nicholas has just given her by stepping out of her reach, not wanting her touching him in any way. And to be honest, it’s so trashy to try to kiss a man who is already wrapped around another woman.

“Simona, nice to see you. Enjoy your evening. Excuse us, it’s time for me and my girlfriend to head inside.”

Boom, and that is how you do it. I didn’t have to say a word. Nicholas made it abundantly clear he is off the market to her and any of her friends that I’m sure she is about to run off and gossip to.

She’s not finished, though, still trying to make sure he knows she is pissed that he dumped her that night.

“Oh, that’s right, you are that girl Nic picked up out of the gutter the other night when we were together.” And the fangs are out, but I won’t sit back and take that lightly.

“Yes, that was when my Prince Charming swept me up in his arms and carried me away to his castle. Enjoy the night with your friend.” As I wave at her and take a few steps forward, Nicholas takes the hint and happily follows, still firmly holding me close. I can hear both Flynn and Lou behind me sniggering like schoolkids. I didn’t want to come off as a bitch before I even got into the place, but she pushed my buttons straight up, and there is no way I’m going to let another woman try to degrade me that way, regardless of who I’m here with.

Why do people have to be so awful while attempting to climb the social ladder? Trying to be anyone other than your true self is a waste of energy.

“I don’t know why I bother hiring security. You are scarier than any of Rem’s people,” Nicholas quickly whispers in my ear as we get closer to the organizers who are greeting people as they enter.

“You’re not the only one who will protect what is theirs,” I reply through my plastered sweet smile, trying not to look like someone who wants to throat punch that woman.

“Victoria.” His low growl in my ear tells me how much he liked that, but he also needs me to stop before he embarrasses himself with an erection he can no longer hide.

“Nicholas, thank you so much for joining us tonight, and of course, for your extremely generous donation.” The older man in the black suit in front of us extends his hand to Nicholas. I’m guessing he’s in his late seventies or early eighties. Nicholas has to let me go to shake his hand. I miss the warmth of his body instantly, and I want to be back in his arms as soon as I can. I didn’t understand how much confidence and strength his touch has given me since we left the car.

“My pleasure, Gordon. I know this was an important charity to my grandfather, along with your friendship,” he says, shaking his hand. “Gordon, please meet my girlfriend, Victoria Packer.” I hold out my hand to shake his, and he takes it and kisses it like an old-school English gentleman. I start to imagine this is what Nicholas’s grandparents would have been like.

Not sure they would be very approving of my display outside the door as a partner for their precious only grandson.

Pushing that thought out of my head, I smile at this gentle man in front of me.

“Victoria, Nicholas didn’t tell me he was bringing such a beautiful date with him. I would have insisted they change the tables so you could sit with me. I would be far more interesting than this young man.”

“Watch this one, he likes to think he is still young enough to sweep women off their feet.” I can hear in his voice how much respect Nicholas has for Gordon.

“How am I doing so far?” His other hand is now patting the top of mine, and I can’t help but giggle.

“Let’s just say Nicholas should be concerned,” I say, which brings out the sweetest laugh in the old man, and I think I have made his night.

“Oh, you flatter me, but keep it coming.” Gordon waves his hand in the air, making us all smile. He has flair, I’ll give him that, and he’s not afraid to use it. “I see you brought the cavalry with you.” Leaning closer to Nicholas and lowering his voice, he says, “I don’t believe a word of what they are saying. You are a good man. If you need any help, you call me.”
