"It is OK. I go home and be fine." Even sick Nico can read the situation better than Porter.

"No. You need to be with someone," Porter stares at Nico like he could win this debate with eye contact. Nico wisely drops his gaze.

"I will not let you be alone in that house," Porter continues.

"I do not live in a house?" Nico mutters uncertainly.

"Then that settles it. You're coming home with me," Porter states.

"Who are you?" Nico may remember Porter as the man who stabbed Vince, but clearly doesn't understand Porter's insistence. However, I do. Porter was saved, and he is very lucky to have me. He now needs to save someone else, and Nico gets to be his little pity project.

"I'm Porter. Knox's boyfriend."

"You want me to stay at Mr Boss Man house?" Nico stammers.

"Well." I give in. I can't say no to Porter. "I suppose we're taking you home."

"I not can go." Nico shakes his head. A frantic attempt to grab my hand doesn't go well for him.

"Calm down, Nico. It will just be for a day or so. Just until you can stand up and move properly."

Nico seems to realise his situation, nodding and giving up in a way. He's resigned himself to doing what he's told. "Good boy. You've given so much to the family. It's time we gave a little back."

"I'll get you everything you need and meet you there." Michael reminds me that he really does care about his patients, despite not having overnight facilities.

"I'm going to buy a hospital for overnight patients," I decide with a degree of self-pride.

"You will be pleased to know that there isn't enough demand on my skills for that. It's only rare cases like this where my patients struggle for somewhere to go." Michael chuckles at my suggestion.

"The upstairs of my club would be perfect," Porter muses as the rest of us get Nico ready to go. "I didn’t know what to do with it, but that would be perfect. I'll train as a nurse, or we could hire one…"

"Porter, I'd be happy to discuss any and all plans you may have. But while I definitely think this is something to consider, Nico is our only concern now." Especially as I have to convince him Porter's idea is his best option.

"Nico, you're coming home with me and Porter until you can prove you can walk on your own."

Nico sighs, resting back on the bed. I've never noticed how small and frail he looks, his character was large enough to make me ignore his youth. His foreign dialect helped to forget his child-like tone. I failed him when his mother died. I was angry and I wanted to avenge my sister's death. I thought that would help him too.

Of course, it didn't. I rampaged around the city looking for the boyfriend until Dad told me his little lie. I couldn't get vengeance for me or Nico after that.

But by then, he was living with Gavriil, he was talking for Gavriil. I thought he was OK.

I can't let him down again.

Chapter thirteen

Nico

IfeellikeI'msleepwalking as I climb from Knox's car. This isn’t really happening.

Knox is worlds above me. I'm barely worthy of cleaning his shoes.

Scrub that, I bet his shoe cleaners are highly trained. I just translate Russian into English, and English into Russian.

They have someone else to do that for them now.

"What size are you?" Porter questions. He spoke nonstop in the car coming over here, so it takes a while to filter in that he wants a response.

"A what?"
