"Would you have me?" Gregory gasps. "I know the job, but technically we're rivals."

"Given that you are the half-brother of the two boys who mean everything to me, you're practically family already."

"I'd be over the moon for anything you're willing to offer me."

"Caeo is stepping across to security, you two can job share while you get the hang of things."

"Sure."

"My clubs are the most important thing to me. The day I started making more in legal profit than the money they were laundering, I knew where my priorities lay. I'd knock the drugs on the head if it wouldn't invite competition."

"Sounds perfect."

A knock interrupts us, as I look up, Caeo enters.

"I'm sorry. Your father went into the kitchen to say goodbye and now he and Porter are shouting."

"About Tiffany?"

"No. About Edward knowing Nico's age and background when he came and making him work instead of going to school."

"Nico isn't a legal resident."

"I'm sorry," Caeo shrugs.

"Ready to start your first day?" I gesture with my head for Gregory to follow. Caeo is great at his job, but he was my father's man before he was mine. I like the idea of Gregory's guaranteed loyalty.

"Nico was legally adopted by a man called Gavriil Petrov, who is here under dual citizenship, English and Russian." Carter explains. "I did a little digging on my newest little brother."

"Nico is a legal resident?" My fingers grip the table in frustration. I could have done so much more for the boy if I'd known.

"Your dad was saying… something about bank accounts, but the kid didn't even know what a debit card was. I was sort of lingering outside the door at the time. My dad was talking about the deal with Andrei Balan. It turns out, Dad had a party to celebrate the deal and had one drunken night with his daughter. He was pretty angry to find out she was kicked out for being pregnant and had to raise the kid on the streets."

"Wouldn't it be nice if this Andrei Balan decided to call Mrs Carter for a little revenge," I suggest, but not completely seriously. This news makes Nico the grandson of the biggest Romanian family. That kid is more important than he will ever know, because I will protect him from all of that.

"You’d better hope my mum never hears about any of this. Not if you want to keep my little brother alive."

"Well, let's face my father first."

"Bring it on," Gregory grins.

We walk towards the kitchen, where I can hear Porter long before I can see him.

"What is going on here?"

"I am sorry," Nico mutters. "I mentioned to Porter what his sister said. Her hunt for my father began discovering many man pays me money. I did not believe her, but Mr Slayer says that it is true."

"But how?" Porter adds in a raised voice. "Apparently you pay him too, Knox. And Caeo. Into a bank account."

"I keep saying I have no account," Nico adds.

"You do. I've been paying you since my sister died." I always thought he knew about the account, but it was Dad who gave me the bank details, so I assumed he told Nico about it.

"And how does an illegal alien have a bank account?" Porter counters.

"I am not alien."

"Illegal accounts for illegal residents," I explain. "It's not impossible."
