“Sleep well, sweetheart.” My heart melts.

“We should tell your parents,” Freddy says after we’re finished tucking Pippa in.

“Not yet. I want Pippa to have some time with her secret. In fact, I think she should be the one who gets to share the news.”

“Are you sure?”

“I want her to be just as involved as we are. She is the big sister. And however it is cobbled together, we are a family.”

Freddy pulls me in for big hug. “I love you, Alex. So very much.”

“I love you, too.”

The next night we take Pippa for supper with my parents. She can hardly contain her excitement at being the one who gets to tell everyone about the twins.

“Can you wait until supper? Or would you rather tell them before?” Freddy asks.

“I can wait. Everyone is going to be so very surprised. Do you think they’ll be happy that there are two babies?”

“I think so. With two babies, there will be fewer arguments about getting to hold them.”

“I should get to hold them the most because they’re my babies,” Pippa declares. Freddy’s laugh gets him a very cross glare. “Daddy!”

“I’m sorry, Poppet. It’s just I was thinking about how there will likely come a point where you won’t want to hold them at all.”

“I don’t think that would ever happen,” she says with absolute defiance.

“Tell me that when one of them does a stinky poo.”

“Ewwww. You’re right, I might not want to hold them then. Or maybe if they’re crying. You and Alex can have them when they do that.”

“Deal.” I say. “Although maybe Daddy should take care of the stinky poos. He has more experience with those than I do.” She gives me a huge grin.

“Hey, you two. That’s not fair, ganging up on a poor defenceless daddy like this.”

“Defenceless, my foot.” I argue.

“I’m outnumbered.”

“That’s right.” I bump elbows with Pippa.

My heart is fairly burstingwith the love I have for my growing family. And suddenly, I'm terrified.

Twins are a higher risk, and what if something goes wrong? What if I lose Alex?

The panic that thought induced is ricocheting inside my head.

“Freddy, what's the matter?” Alex asks, her voice is soft and gentle. Soothing.

Pippa skips into the lounge before can think of what to say. She’s carrying the sleep suit she came home from the hospital in.

“Daddy, two babies are a problem. When it was just one baby, it was going to come home in this. But it’s two babies, and—”

“And there is a box of your baby things in the attic. We can bring them down later and you can choose what the babies will wear.”
