But she ignored her runaway heart and that strange, fluttery feeling in her stomach.

“We could help each other out. A partnership of sorts,” she offered.

Dante shook his head. “Don’t you know anything? My crew works alone. This fire is the kind of thing that starts a fucking war. It ain’t for regular folks like you.”

Sage looked around her and pointed at the body shop. Or what was left of it.

“Seems like war has already been declared. And I’m a farmer. I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty.”

DANTE

What the fuck was wrong with Sage?

Was she batshit crazy or incredibly brave?

Dante was still unsure.

Running into town to help with the firefighting efforts was one thing.

Making a play to partner with his crew to take on Midnight Carnage was entirely something else.

The woman had balls almost as big as Dante. And he had big fucking balls.

Then there was no time to think about her at all.

They both headed back to help the fire crews, taking turns aiming the water and monitoring the nearby buildings for signs of possible spreading.

He had to admire Sage for her strength and tenacity. She was as strong as some of the men who were battling the blaze, working without a break for over an hour as the heat and the smoke intensified again, then calmed.

The sun began to rise, and the devastation of the fires became even more apparent in the light of day.

The body shop and the bar, built with the Hellraisers’ blood and sweat, was no more.

Dante knew it was Padraig and his crew behind all this but proving it was going to be an uphill battle.

They’d driven off at eight, but they must’ve come back. Or left something to burn slowly over time. But what did they use to start the fire? There was an overwhelming scent of gasoline but that could’ve been from the cars in the shop.

The security sensors had gone off, but by the time the responders had arrived, it was too late. The fire had already spread. Xander had a monitoring system in place for all their businesses, but it wasn’t foolproof. He was analyzing the data back at the clubhouse and hopefully it would give them something.

The major problem was the fact that the fire would be investigated by the cops. And that was one thing any MC hated dealing with.

Not only had someone destroyed two of the Hellraisers’ most valuable businesses, but the public investigation would put the spotlight on them, and things would only get complicated from here. Maybe that was the sole purpose of the fire. To get the club under the watchful eye of the cops. The Hellraisers would have to watch their step very carefully from here on out.

At seven AM, Dante and most of the crew left the scene to the other firefighters and headed back to the compound to grab some sleep and re-fuel.

But sleep just wouldn’t come.

Dante kept replaying the night over and over in his head.

Padraig hadn’t even gotten off his bike. They’d exchanged words, he threw the package on the ground, and he and the rest of his Midnight Carnage crew took off out of town. Why do that and then come back later to set the fire?

But still, the timing was not to be ignored. Dante had never believed in coincidence.

They’d have their answer soon. Gage had texted a short while ago to confirm that fire investigators from nearby Canmore were already onsite, prowling around the scene, asking a fuckton of questions.

Chances were they’d never find proof to point a finger at anyone.
