Ugh.

I make my way out of the bathroom, not looking where I’m going, and walk right into a wall of very hard unfamiliar muscle. His hands find my forearms and I look up to see a guy that’s probably in his mid-thirties.

“Oh, I’m sorry.” He’s attractive objectively and if I wasn’t so obsessed with my best friend’s dad, I may be able to appreciate it more. His brown eyes are warm and a smile finds his face.

“No need for apologies. A woman as gorgeous as you bumping into a guy—well, I should be thanking you.” He lets me go and I give him a polite smile.

“Thank you.” I go to move down the hallway when he speaks again.

“The guy you’re with…” he starts and when I turn around his eyes drop to my hand, “I don’t see a ring on your finger, so I assume he’s not your husband.”

“Not yet.” I hear Theo’s voice from behind me and then his hand snakes around my waist, pulling me closer to him. Theo moves to stand next to me and rubs my waist, holding me tighter against him. “Everything okay here?”

I nod, my voice having left me after hearing him say,“Not yet.”

Not yet?

“You ready to go?” He looks at me before his eyes turn to the guy, looking him up and down once. The guy clears his throat and moves around us leaving us alone in the hallway outside of the bathroom. Theo narrows his eyes, following after him. “I told you everyone was looking at you,” he says before he turns his gaze back to mine.

“Not yet?” I blurt out, not giving a shit about who’s looking at me.

His lips find my neck as he whispers in my ear. “I was making a point.”Goosebumps instantly pop up all over my flesh.

“Which is?”

“That you’re spoken for.”

“Am I?”

He narrows his eyes with a look of confusion and maybe also a little irritation. “Are you what?”

“Spoken for.”

“We’ve been over this. Yes. You’re fucking mine, Avery, just like I’m yours.”

“But no one knows that.” I blink at him.

“Okay…?” He boxes me against the wall, pressing his strong hard body against mine with his hands above my head. “We’ve talked about this.”

“I know.” The tequila is starting to settle in and the course of this conversation is going to push me to tears if I don’t change it.

“Why do I get the feeling you want to talk about it again?”

A flicker of hope washes over me and I do my best not to fixate on it because this wasn’t the plan. “Are you open to talking about it again?”

His eyes trace my face and then his hands find my cheeks. “Do you know what that means?”

I nod again, the tears finding my eyes. I feel like he might be telling me this is over because no one was ever supposed to know. That was the deal.

“I just know myself and…I’m just going to get,” I swallow trying to rid the ball of emotion sitting in the back of my throat, “attached.” The tequila is making me honest and I capitalize on the moment. “I won’t be able to hide my feelings forever.”And even though we are in a bar where anyone could turn the corner and witness what’s happening, a tear begins to slide down my face despite my efforts to stop it.

“Please don’t cry.” He presses his forehead to mine and rubs his thumb gently along my cheek to collect the stray tear. “Fuck, how did we get here?”

I sniffle. “I don’t know.”

“We should go,” he says, sealing his comment with a kiss to my lips and guiding me out of the restaurant.

We didn’t say anything on the five-minute walk back to the hotel and by the time we are alone in the elevator, I feel like I could climb out of my fucking skin. “Say something,” he says as he reaches for my hand and clasps it with mine.
