"Of course you will. You're a smart, resourceful young woman. You won't make any more mistakes."

"Yeah." No fucking pressure.

He stepped back as Mannix returned.

"I just spoke to Daisy Lasalle, she's unaware of any assignment Reuben might have sent Hunter and Parker on. She's going to contact him and get back to me." He shoved his phone back into his pocket.

"Did you have them killed, Sam?" Ice asked cheerfully. "I'd be disappointed if you did and didn't let me take part." He glanced at me and his mask slipped slightly. He absolutely held a grudge against me and the twins for turning him and Kennedy in to Dad. If he had his way, I'd be hanging from chains in his workroom right now.

Slade caught his look and stiffened, moving over closer to me.

"Not yet," Dad said. "I did tell them to stay away from Lila."

"Maybe they finally took your advice and fucked off," Ares said with a grunt.

"Doubtful. They seemed to have attached themselves to my daughter." Dad gave me a dark look. I shouldn’t be surprised he knew that. The walls had ears, particularly here at Brutham.

Only Kennedy seemed sympathetic. Of course she would, he didn't approve of her choice of boyfriends either. It seemed all of his daughters were destined to disappoint him when it came to our relationships.

"They've been very good to me," I said flatly. "All they want is to make me happy. If it wasn't for them, I'd be dead. If they hadn't found me when they did—"

"If you hadn't accepted that teddy bear, none of that would have mattered," Dad said, straight to the point.

"Maybe you should take that up with your stepson." Slade clearly had enough with my father and his tone. "I haven't ruled out the possibility Chloe was involved in that too. Where are they anyway?" He gave me a look to remind me he'd suggested I not hurry out to see Dad. Evidently, neither had they.

"She's coming down the steps now." Ice nodded behind me. He gave her a smile that was more genuine than the one he gave me.

It seemed he'd taken sides. That was something I'd have to work on, or have him killed. I'd rather not do that. I might need Kennedy at some point in the future. Nothing would alienate her more quickly than killing one of her boyfriends. In the end, that was up to him.

"Dad." Chloe hugged him. Then she hugged Kennedy.

Our sister seemed as pleased to see her as Ice was. If Kennedy took sides against me too, then we may have a problem. If I had to deal with her, then I'd have to deal with all three of her boyfriends as well.

When had that headache started? My forehead throbbed.

Mannix's phone rang. He pulled it back out, glanced at the screen and took a few steps away again. He frowned as he listened and spoke to whoever was on the other end of the phone. The conversation lasted less than a minute. He stalked back over to us.

"Daisy Lasalle said Reuben knows nothing about where Hunter and Parker are. He didn't send them anywhere."

"What the fuck?" I stared at him. "Is she sure?"

He glared at me. "That's what she said Reuben told her. Either they don't know, or they don't see any reason for us to know. For what it’s worth, she said Reuben sounded pissed off."

"Reuben always sounds pissed off," Dad said. "It's part of his asshole persona."

"Reuben would have good reason to sound pissed off if the twins went missing," Slade said.

"Oh, I don't know," Chloe said slowly. "It seems like that pair has caused him a lot of trouble recently. It wouldn't surprise me if he decided to deal with them." She looked all too fucking smug.

I wanted to scratch the expression off her face.

"They've never given him a reason to dispose of them," I said firmly.

"Are you sure about that?" Ice asked. "They've given a lot of people a lot of reasons to dispose of them. The list is long. Reuben, me, Mannix, Ares, Sam, his brother Zeke, that dude who plays keyboard for Wolf Venom."

"Penn," Kennedy said with a sigh.

Mannix actually growled. "Don't give me an excuse to have him killed."
