Maybe even look to do a world tour next year. Then all this would be behind me.

“Take some time to read through the proposal carefully and come back to me with any queries. There were a couple of details I had to concede on.”

Chloe’s ears pricked up. She was determined to pay full attention to any and all contracts that she put her name to going forward.

“Like what?”

“The Royal Resorts people want to appoint their own manager to help handle the weekly shows in Las Vegas. Of course my LA based team will be involved in overseeing things, but since their manager will be working more along the lines of being your personal assistant, I figured you wouldn’t have a problem with that minor detail. And it will also give you some breathing space to consider what people you will need working for you in the future. I’m assuming you will eventually replace some of your former employees.”

Chloe hadn’t put much thought into the people she might bring on board to replace Marta, Gabriela, or even Stixxluv. If she was honest about it, she’d been enjoying the peace and quiet without people constantly in her ear.

She didn’t miss having a chorus of voices all telling her what to wear, what to eat, and whose company she should keep. The silence had become rather liberating. She could also admit to it being more than a little scary.

“Do they have anyone particular in mind to work for me? I mean that could be a deal breaker if the two of us don’t get along.”

Nancy frowned, then hurriedly flicked through some of the other papers in her folder. She pulled out a printed email.Gen X, old school. She prints out emails.“Ah yes, actually this is really positive news. They are clearly taking this contract seriously. They’ve offered to have one of the members of the family who own Royal Resorts act as your manager.”

Cold dread slid down Chloe’s back. Royal Resorts were owned by Jordan’s family. She couldn’t imagine having to work with someone who knew her ex, while at the same time having to keep their failed romance a closely guarded secret. One wrong word and things could get messy, fast.

“They have suggested Jordan Royal.”

Chloe’s breath caught.Damn. Damn. Of course its him. How stupid was I to think that the universe was done with slapping me around.

“From the look of it, he works in the resort business here in the USA.” Nancy lifted her gaze and smiled at Chloe. “The House of Royal actually owns a ton of businesses around the world. If this Vegas thing works out well, who knows, we might be able to secure some other deals with them. Clothing, perfume, beauty, you know all those things could help to extend your brand. And make you some serious money. Your debts could be cleared in no time. We can’t expect that Foster will be looking to settle any pending legal cases in the next few years.”

Her former manager would do his utmost to drag it all out. To make Chloe suffer as much public humiliation as possible.

But she wasn’t all that bothered about Foster. Her lawyers and accountants would deal with him. Chloe’s brain had fixated on the nameJordan Royal. It was scrambling to figure outhow she could get out of having to do the Vegas gig while still managing to save her beloved home.

What must Jordan be making of all this? And why had he agreed to work with her, when he’d been the one who’d walked out and ended their relationship? He hadn’t even bothered to respond to her New Year’s Eve message.

I still don’t know why I sent him that text. He probably hates me by now.

Likely Jordan had a new woman in his life, and he had moved on.

And as for the extended brand pieces, she could just imagine what Edward Royal would say to having a pop star cheapen the Royal brand. She might well be the biggest artist in the US, but to an old money stuck up billionaire, she would still be nothing more than a girl from Nebraska. Fame and wealth didn’t change who she was or where she’d come from. His people didn’t mix with folks like her.

Which is why Jordan didn’t want to bring his daddy here for my album launch. He was ashamed of me.

Las Vegas, of course, would be the exception. Rules didn’t apply in sin city, money spoke loudest. The executives from Royal Resorts would be in town for the concert announcement and more than likely her opening night. Other than that, they would treat her like she was just another employee.

Focus, Chloe. This is important. Don’t worry about rich people and their egos.

“Did they say why they had chosen this Jordan guy? I mean, he’s a guy. Doesn’t that seem a little odd to you?”

Nancy quickly turned the pages of the contract to the section where the amount of money Chloe would earn per concert was clearly set out. She waved the paper under Chloe’s nose saying. “I would suggest you worry about this dollar figure and let the Royal Resorts people deal with the rest. It’s not as if you and this Jordan Royal person will be living in one another’s pockets. You will have your own private suite in the hotel, and he will simply be helping to make sure you’ve got everything you need.”

She was in a bind, and Nancy was offering her a multimillion dollar way out. “I’m sorry. I have a terrible habit of being my own worst enemy at times. Did you want me to sign the contract now?”

Her manager gave her a soft smile and handed Chloe the contract. “No, Chloe. What I want you to do is read this from front to back at least a half dozen times. We are going to train you to have a laser focus on everything you put your name to from now on.” Chloe noted the hint of patronizing in Nancy’s tone. “And I’m not joking when I say there will be a pop quiz on the contents of the contract before you get anywhere near a pen.”

Okay.Chloe wisely held her tongue. This woman had been brought in to save her career. To do all the things her former management team hadn’t done. Making Chloe take the time to be across the details of contracts was an important part of her new manager’s job.

“Thank you, Nancy. It’s good to have you on my side of the contract negotiations.”

“That’s what you pay me the big chunk of commission for, Chloe. Now, if we are in agreement with this deal, I’ll get in touch with the Royal Resorts people to arrange the details of the contract signing. In the meantime, if you have any questions drop me an email.”

After her manager finally left, Chloe sat down and read the contract. She made some notes. The Vegas deal looked fantastic on paper, and she could understand why several other stars had been keen to secure the residency. It all made perfect business sense. The only thing she couldn’t get her head around was why Jordan had been appointed her special manager.
