She nodded. “I don’t have any staff, and I don’t have anything to wear to the press conference.”

There would probably come a time, hopefully many months from now when they would have to talk about her problems. But Chloe was determined that it wouldn’t be now. She was not going to spend the next eight months with Jordan giving her his pity smile.

I couldn’t stand it.

He dumped the rest of the clothes onto the floor and pulled out his cell. Jordan held Chloe’s gaze while he made a call. “Hi, you. Yep. Good. And you?” There was some humming and nodding. “Listen I need a massive favor.” Chloe couldn’t make out what was being said on the other end of the line, but whoever Jordan was talking to spoke very fast.

“Her name? Um. Can you keep a secret?” More hurried words. “It’s Chloe.” More hurried words. “Yes, that Chloe.” Chloe caught the high pitched squeal of delight as Jordan held the phone away from his ear.

“Who are you talking to?”

“My cousin Camille. She is a French fashion designer, currently working with Saks Fifth Avenue. I thought she might be able to help.”

Chloe took the phone. “Hi, Camille. This is Chloe.”

Snuffling and snorting came down the line. “Oh my god, I am such a fan. And … oh my god. Whatever you need, you only have to ask. I am all yours.”

The service mantra seemed to run in the Royal family.

“I need an outfit for a press conference being held in Vegas—let’s say in four days’ time. I know that’s a tough ask, but if you have anything …”

“Consider it done, Mon Chérie. Where are you now?”

She didn’t want to tell Jordan’s cousin exactly where she was right now, or her state of undress, which Chloe had just realized was a bra and boyleg panties. “I’m in Vegas staying at the Royal Resorts hotel in one of the sky villas. But no one knows I am here, it’s top secret.”

“I would love to work with you Chloe. We can do this, don’t you worry. Could you please put Jordan back on?” Perplexed, Chloe handed Jordan his phone.

He did another round of humming and nodding. “Okay, see you tomorrow.” And then he hung up. “Camille will be arriving in the morning. She’ll bring her sewing equipment and materials with her and set up in your sky villa.”

Wow, that was quick.

“How about we pay for the things you want to keep, and then let’s take them back to the hotel. I’m thinking we will skip the desert house for tonight, which frees you up to talk to Cam. I’ll give you her contact details, and the two of you can hopefully agree on a few things before she gets here in the morning. In the meantime I will let Bryce know that you have decided on a date for the press conference. How does that sound?”

It sounded like a sensible plan. Chloe was a little disappointed over the delay in their visit to the house, but super excited at the prospect of cousin Camille arriving in the morning. Once again Jordan had come through for her. “Thank you, that is amazing. You really do know how to make things happen.”

Chloe reached out and took a hold of the sleeve of Jordan’s light cotton sweater, drawing him to her. “Um. I mean it. Thank you for this, for bringing me here, and all you’ve done. I know I don’t really deserve it.”

A warm hand brushed over her cheek. “Everyone deserves to have friends.”

“Am I your friend? I mean after throwing Zapp at you, and then that song. To be honest I expected that you would just hate me.”

He lowered his head and their foreheads touched. “I was pretty pissed about Zapp, but it wouldn’t have been a problem if Marta had let you know I called. And as forBitter Babe, yeah, I’m nowhere near ready to begin to unpack that disaster.” Jordan nodded. “You of all people must know that song rips me to shreds every time I hear it. You don’t write a revenge song without intending to inflict maximum damage, and you did. Chloe, you cut me to the soul.”

She’d poured her pain and anger into the lyrics, which had made the song so powerful. Millions of people had related to her heartbreak. It was too late for regrets, but she could try reaching out to him.

“Would sorry be a good place for me to start?”

Jordan breathed a soft. “Yeah, that would be nice.”

Chloe had an even better place they could begin. Rising up on her toes, she slipped a hand around the back of Jordan’s neck and as he lifted his head, she offered him her lips. Sensing his moment of hesitancy, she made the first move and kissed him. When she drew back, accepting that this was not what he wanted, Jordan clasped a firm hand to her ass and pulled her hard against him.

His lips came crashing down on hers in a fiery kiss that was dirty, messy, and full of the pain of longing. His tongue delved deep into her mouth, and she met him stroke for stroke.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” she whispered.

“Shh, just kiss me.”

Jordan wrapped her up in his embrace and kissed her once more. They were still a long way from finding one another, butyesthis was a damn good place to start.
