“Are you kidding?” Hadn’t he been sporting an erection every single fucking time he looked at her? Before he could stop himself, he jumped out of the car and took Val into his arms. He held her close. So close her heart beat against his, and just as she was arguing that he had to let her go, he crushed his mouth to hers in a searing kiss.

She froze, but only for a second.

Then her fingers were in his hair, and she was kissing him back with everything she had. Her tongue rubbed against his, and she dug her fingers into his scalp. He palmed her ass, making sure she could feel the hard length of him against the softness of her hip.

“You’re not just my type, hon. You’re the original. Call me later, okay? Humor me.”

She licked her lips, and he was mesmerized by her tongue. “Fine. I’ll humor you. You did, after all, come with me. Still don’t super know why.”

“I’ll tell you one day,” he vowed.

Val narrowed her eyes at him. “It had nothing to do with sheriff or alpha duties, did it?”

He shrugged and added a mischievous grin so she wouldn’t catch on. “Maybe. Maybe not.” He cupped one of her cheeks in his hand and looked at her deep in the eyes. “Call me.”

And with that, he hopped back in his truck and drove away, making a beeline for his office. He’d been gone a long time, and he wanted to make sure the town was still running smoothly.

Finally in his office, he went over Jaymes’s notes but couldn’t focus. He couldn’t concentrate on anything. He was just about to give up when he heard a familiar gait coming down the hallway. Atlas walked into his office without knocking.

Nero wasn’t even shocked at this. He’d known Atlas for too long. “You’ve been gone,” his friend said. “Jaymes told me you were chasing after that other vamp with the redhead.”

“Half-Blood, and yes. We found Lilliane. Brought her back to stay with Valentine for a little bit.”

“Why? Why would you do that?”

Nero shrugged. “Valentine is my mate.”

It should have been explanation enough, but Nero should have guessed that his friend wouldn’t understand the mate’s pull. Or the desire to make one’s mate truly happy.

“Are you insane?”

“Am I insane?” Nero repeated. He shook his head. “No. I don’t think I’m insane, but Valentine is my mate, and I was having some pretty terrible feelings that she was gonna go off on her own to get her sister. I didn’t want to lose her.”

Atlas threw his hands up. “Between you and Reece, we’re screwed. Soon enough, we’ll be overrun by vamps.”

“Half-Bloods,” Nero corrected.

“Whatever,” Atlas snapped. “That girl you brought is going to cause us nothing but trouble. It’s bad enough we already killed one vampire council member; now we’ve gone and kidnapped one of their brides.”

“She’s no one’s bride,” Nero insisted.

“You don’t know that. You’re mate-blind.”

Nero snorted. “What’s that now?”

Atlas pressed on, anger making his cheeks dark red. “You are blinded by your mate.”

“Maybe.”

“I wouldn’t risk my pack or my town for a mate,” he insisted.

Nero threw his head back with a laugh. “Yeah. Yeah, you would. When you meet her, and Ireallyhope you meet her soon so you can understand, you would do anything for her.Anything.”

“I don’t see how that can be true.”

“Just wait,” Nero insisted.

“I don’t have time for this. Not if the council comes at us again, and this time, with good reason.”
