Slowly, she turned.

There Nikolas was, sitting on the couch with one of his hands curled possessively around one of Lilliane’s knees. Her sister didn’t look scared or even remotely surprised at the vampire’s presence in the cabin.

“Did you tell him where you were?” she asked.

Lil shrugged, but it was Nikolas who answered. “You might think that because your older sister wiggled out of the deal that you two can just run along, but you can’t.”

“You weren’t invited in,” she blurted.

Nikolas threw his head back with a laugh. “Lilliana invited me in.”

Her nostrils flared. “Her name is Lilliane. I don’t know why you keep adding that lasta, but it makes you an asshole. You can’t just rename her.”

“Val, stop,” Lilliane said as if she were exhausted. “I thought they would be okay with me visiting you for a while, but as it turns out, they’re not.”

“Well, tough shit for the vamps. You’re not going anywhere. What’s with you? Do you have Stockholm Syndrome or something? Do we need to get a therapist or two in here to remind you that you do not like vampires and like Nikolas the least? He’s a creep! Why would you want to goanywherewith him.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Lil responded.

Valentine’s face was hot and red with fury. “I don’t recognize you at all,” she cried. “You are without a doubt the feistiest one of us, and here you are, sitting with this jerk and totally okay with him taking you away from your family?”

“Lilliana,” Nikolas said with a voice that sent shivers down Val’s spine. “Tell your sister that her hysteria isn’t becoming.”

“Don’t talk like I’m not here,” she huffed. “And don’t tell my sister what to do.”

“Your sister is going to come with me. Not in seven days. Now. You are going to tell your little wolf friends to mind their own business. If not, I can always make sure you are never in my way again.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “I’d like to see you try. I amneverletting you take my sister away from me. Do you hear me?Never. I was never going to send her back.”

“Val, shut up,” Lilliane said. “You’re really not helping.”

She turned her gaze to her sister. “I love you, Lil. Even right now when you are clearlyoutof your mind. I love you. You are not going to marry any vamp. I will never let that happen.”

“Too bad,” Nikolas growled. “Looks like I’ll have to take matters into my own hands.” Nikolas lunged for her with his sharp vampire fangs poised to make a snack out of her, but it was the small dagger in his hand that made her pause.

Was hereallygoing to kill her? Right here in this cabin, right after the best moment of her life?

Because now that she was certain she was facing death, Valentine had an epiphany. She had sex with Nero, and it was by far the best moment of her life.

Yup.

He had treated her with sweetness and passion, and he hadn’t actually tricked her.

She had been a willing participant, and now, she was going to die. She was going to die and never get to sleep with Nero again, and that was a damn shame. She would never get to the bottom of the wholeyou’re my matething.

And that was the biggest shame of all.

A second before Nikolas’s dagger found her ribcage, Valentine rolled out of the way. He slid onto the couch, shocked by her fast movements, but he didn’t stop coming for her.

“Hey, you can’t kill my sister,” Lilliane cried, jumping on his back. “That goes against the deal! Stop! Stop this right now!”

Nikolas grabbed Lil and threw her across the room. She landed on one of the dining room chairs with a sickening thud and didn’t move again. She lay among broken chair legs, motionless and pale. The vampire looked at the collapsed body with a triumphant grin before lunging for Valentine again.

She slid toward her fallen sister. “Lil! Get up! I might need your help! Lil!”

There was no movement. Valentine took one of the broken chair legs … a wooden stake … and pointed it at the vampire rushing toward her. “Stop, or I’ll stab you!” she cried.

Nikolas chuckled dryly. “You’re no threat.” He swiped at her with the dagger, slicing through her arm. She hissed at the sting as blood welled up from the wound.
