“Do you think our father is dead?” Val asked, holding tightly to Celestine’s hand.

“I don’t know. Do we really care? He wasn’t exactly a good person.”

Nero agreed with Ceecee. Sylvesterhadtried to kill Val just a moment ago! “I’m sorry,” Nero whispered to his mate. “He’s probably gone now. I don’t see how a vamp could escape from that. Even LordButtmunchshould be in there.”

“WhereisLilliane?” Val asked, looking around. Nero was sure she was devastated about her father, even though the vamp had just tried to kill her. Val would focus on her sisters.

“I don’t know,” Celestine replied. “She ran by me and Reece, but I lost track of her.”

“She can’t have stayed in the house. She knew the plan!” Val panicked.

“Cupid! Cupid!Cuuuupid” a woman’s scream ripped through the air.

“That’s Lil! That’s the code word!” Val gasped. “Lil!”

Nero shook his head. “What? Impossible. All the vamps are locked up. Atlas was supposed to keep an eye on her after he set the fire.”

“Then why is she yelling?”

He shrugged. “Who knows?”

“Something’s wrong,” she shouted over her shoulder, running toward the screaming.

They rounded the corner and spotted Atlas with Lilliane thrown over his shoulder. Lil was smacking his ass as she chanted, “Let me go. Let me go!”

“What the hell is going on?” Val asked.

“She’s a pain in the ass. She … argh!” Atlas kept walking by them. “She bit my ass.”

“You deserve it,” Lil snapped. “Put me down.”

“I’m gonna take you somewhere you can’t cause trouble for the next decade, d’ya hear me?” Atlas growled. “No more vamps around here. I’ll make sure of that.”

“You won’t let him take me, will you?” Lilliane cried.

Nero took one look at Atlas and laughed. He squeezed Val’s hand and wiggled his brows. Val suppressed her smile. “You’re in good hands, Lil.”

“Seriously? Traitor!” Lilliane continued to shout until Atlas walked her out of earshot.

“I’ve got a feeling about those two,” Nero chuckled.

Val joined in on the laugh. “Same.”

TWENTY-EIGHT

VALENTINE

Two days had passed since the Longborn estate went up in smoke, taking with it all the vampire council members that had come to town to get Lilliane back.

In those two days, Valentine had tried to get in touch with Lil, but Atlas had her under lock and key. Apparently, her little sister was really ashamed of what she had brought to the town, and she was choosing to take a few weeks alone in seclusion to think about her actions and how she could repair it all.

It didn’t sound like Lilliane, but the Longborn sisters’ lives had taken a turn lately, and Val wasn’t going to sit there and try to make sense of it all.

She had better things to do.

Like recovering from the fact that her father had actually tried to kill her.

Oh, and the fact she’d told Nero they could date.
